Word Meanings:

  • Ummiyyūn (أُمِّيُّونَ): Those who cannot read or write; the unlettered.
  • Amānī (أَمَانِيَّ): Plural of *umniyyah*, meaning wishful fancies, baseless hopes, or mere recitations without understanding.
  • Yazunnūn (يَظُنُّونَ): They assume or conjecture, i.e., they follow mere supposition rather than certainty.

Explanation of the Verse:

Among the People of the Book—specifically the Jews at the time of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)—there was a group of unlettered people who could neither read nor write. They had no real knowledge of the Torah, its true contents, or the signs it contained regarding the coming of the final Messenger, Muhammad (peace be upon him). Their acquaintance with the Scripture was nothing more than reciting words by rote, without grasping their meanings, or clinging to baseless tales and wishful fancies passed down by their misguided scholars. They did not follow divine truth with certainty; rather, they relied on mere conjecture and assumption, mistaking their illusions for the actual revelation of Allah.

This verse exposes a profound reality: ignorance is not merely the absence of knowledge, but the dangerous state of believing in falsehood while thinking it is truth. These people were not guided by the light of revelation, nor did they seek it sincerely—they were content with inherited fables and deceptive hopes.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, ponder this verse and let it awaken your heart. How many people today, like those described here, follow religion blindly—repeating rituals and phrases without understanding their meaning, or relying on cultural traditions and hearsay instead of the pure guidance of the Qur’an and the authentic Sunnah? Allah, in His infinite mercy, has sent down the Qur’an as a clear, accessible Book—one that invites every human being, literate or not, to know their Creator with certainty. He did not leave us to wander in darkness or to depend on the guesses of others. He gave us a direct, unaltered revelation, and He sent a Messenger whose character and message were themselves living proofs of the truth.

Do not be among those who merely "hope" for Paradise while neglecting the path that leads to it. Do not be satisfied with secondhand religion. Open the Qur’an, reflect on its meanings, and let it transform your life. The door of guidance is open, and the light of certainty is within your reach. Allah says: "And those who strive for Us—We will surely guide them to Our ways" (Qur’an 29:69). Take that step today, and you will find that Allah never abandons the sincere seeker.

📜 Verse 76-80 — Al-Baqarah

76وَإِذَا لَقُوا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا قَالُوا آمَنَّا وَإِذَا خَلَا بَعْضُهُمْ إِلَىٰ بَعْضٍ قَالُوا أَتُحَدِّثُونَهُم بِمَا فَتَحَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْكُمْ لِيُحَاجُّوكُم بِهِ عِندَ رَبِّكُمْ ۚ أَفَلَا تَعْقِلُونَ
And when they meet those who believe, they say, "We have believed"; but when they are alone with one another, they say, "Do you talk to them about what Allah has revealed to you so they can argue with you about it before your Lord?" Then will you not reason?
77أَوَلَا يَعْلَمُونَ أَنَّ اللَّهَ يَعْلَمُ مَا يُسِرُّونَ وَمَا يُعْلِنُونَ
But do they not know that Allah knows what they conceal and what they declare?
78وَمِنْهُمْ أُمِّيُّونَ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ الْكِتَابَ إِلَّا أَمَانِيَّ وَإِنْ هُمْ إِلَّا يَظُنُّونَ
And among them are unlettered ones who do not know the Scripture except in wishful thinking, but they are only assuming.
So woe to those who write the "scripture" with their own hands, then say, "This is from Allah," in order to exchange it for a small price. Woe to them for what their hands have written and woe to them for what they earn.
80وَقَالُوا لَن تَمَسَّنَا النَّارُ إِلَّا أَيَّامًا مَّعْدُودَةً ۚ قُلْ أَتَّخَذْتُمْ عِندَ اللَّهِ عَهْدًا فَلَن يُخْلِفَ اللَّهُ عَهْدَهُ ۖ أَمْ تَقُولُونَ عَلَى اللَّهِ مَا لَا تَعْلَمُونَ
And they say, "Never will the Fire touch us, except for a few days." Say, "Have you taken a covenant with Allah? For Allah will never break His covenant. Or do you say about Allah that which you do not know?"
