Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Kitābun min ‘indi Allāh: A Book from Allah — meaning the Qur’an.
- Muṣaddiq: Confirming and attesting to the truth of what came before it.
- Yastaftiḥūn: Seeking victory and triumph through a prophet — they used to pray for Allah’s help against their enemies by invoking the coming of the final prophet.
- Mā ‘arafū: What they recognized — the truth they already knew from their scriptures.
- La‘nat Allah: The curse of Allah — His expulsion and distancing from His mercy.
Tafsir (Explanation):
When the Qur’an came to the Jews of Medina from Allah, it was a Book that confirmed the truth of the Torah they already possessed. It agreed with the core principles and authentic teachings found in their own scripture — the oneness of Allah, the obligation of obedience to Him, and the glad tidings of a final messenger. Yet, despite this clear confirmation, they rejected it and denied the prophethood of Muhammad (peace be upon him).
What makes their rejection even more astonishing is their own history. Before the advent of the Prophet (peace be upon him), they used to pray for victory over the disbelieving Arabs, saying: “The time has come for a prophet to be sent at the end of time; we will follow him and fight alongside him against you.” They would ask Allah to grant them triumph through him. They were so certain of his coming that they used his arrival as a weapon of hope and a source of confidence against their enemies.
But when the very prophet they had awaited — the one whose description they knew as clearly as they knew their own children — came to them, not from among the Children of Israel but from the Arabs, they rejected him out of envy and arrogance. They recognized him fully, yet they refused to believe. They knew he was the truth, but their pride and worldly interests blinded them.
So Allah declared: “The curse of Allah is upon the disbelievers.” This is a stern warning that encompasses all who knowingly reject the truth after it has become clear to them.
A Da‘wah Reflection:
This verse carries a profound lesson for every soul: knowledge without action is a burden, and recognition without submission is a loss. The Jews of that time knew the truth better than anyone, yet their knowledge did not save them — because they refused to act upon it. How many of us today know the Qur’an, know the Sunnah, know the beauty of Islam, yet delay our obedience or turn away when the truth demands sacrifice?
Let this be a call to sincerity: when the truth reaches your heart, do not let envy, pride, or worldly gain stand between you and Allah. The very Book that was sent as a mercy became a witness against them because of their rejection. And today, the Qur’an is in your hands — not as a witness against you, but as a guide to your salvation. Open your heart, submit to its call, and let it transform you. For the one who embraces the truth with humility will find Allah’s mercy, while the one who turns away will only earn His curse.
The door of repentance is open, and the mercy of Allah is vast. Do not be like those who knew and still lost. Be among those who recognized the truth and rushed to it — for that is the path of success in this life and the next.
