Word Meanings:
- أَمْثَلُهُمْ طَرِيقَةً (amthaluhum tareeqah): The most upright among them in conduct, the most sound in judgment, and the most balanced in opinion.
- لَبِثْتُمْ (labithtum): You remained or stayed (in the worldly life or in the graves).
Explanation of the Verse:
On the Day of Resurrection, when the trumpet is blown and people are raised from their graves, they will find themselves in a state of utter confusion and terror. They will whisper among themselves, trying to estimate how long they had remained in the earth — in their graves and in the worldly life. Some will say it was a single day, others will say a few hours, and still others will be even more confused.
Allah, the Exalted, tells us in this noble verse that He knows perfectly well what they are whispering and saying — nothing is hidden from Him, not even the faintest thought that crosses their minds. At that moment, the most rational and clear-headed among them — the one with the soundest judgment and the most balanced reasoning — will speak up and say: "You have remained only one day."
Why would he say this? Because when they witness the overwhelming horrors and immense terrors of the Day of Judgment, the entire span of their worldly life — however long it was — will seem like nothing more than a single fleeting day. The shortness of that perception reflects how insignificant worldly life truly is compared to the eternal realities of the Hereafter.
This verse carries a profound lesson for us in this life: the world, with all its pleasures, pursuits, and trials, is but a brief moment in the grand scheme of eternity. Yet how often do we live as though this world will never end? How often do we postpone our repentance, delay our good deeds, and immerse ourselves in distractions, forgetting that we will one day wake up in a place where even a hundred years of worldly life will feel like a single day?
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, let this verse awaken your heart. The people on that Day will realize how short their time was — but that realization will come too late. Now, while you are still breathing, while your heart still beats, and while the door of repentance remains open, you have the golden opportunity to make every moment count. Do not let your life pass you by in heedlessness, only to wake up on that Day and say, "I remained but a day."
Invest your hours in what truly matters: prayer, charity, kindness to parents, seeking knowledge, and drawing closer to your Creator. For the One who knows every whisper on that Day is the same One who hears your every supplication today. He is Al-Alim (The All-Knowing), and He knows your struggles, your intentions, and your sincere efforts. Let that knowledge bring you comfort and motivate you to live a life that will make that Day easier for you — a day when even the wisest among them will be stunned by the brevity of what they once called "life."
