Word Meanings:

  • يَتَخَافَتُونَ (yatakhāfatūn): They whisper to one another, speaking in low, secretive voices.
  • لَبِثْتُمْ (labithtum): You remained or stayed (in this worldly life or in the interval before resurrection).
  • إِلَّا عَشْرًا (illā ʿashran): Except ten (days or nights).

Tafsir (Explanation):

On the Day of Resurrection, when the Trumpet is blown and humanity is raised from their graves, the terror and awe of that moment will overwhelm them. In that state of sheer dread, people will not speak loudly or boastfully; rather, they will whisper among themselves, exchanging hushed words, unable to comprehend the magnitude of what has befallen them. Their minds, clouded by the shock of the resurrection, will make them feel as though their stay in the worldly life — or in the interval between death and resurrection — was but a fleeting moment, no more than ten days or nights.

This verse captures the psychological state of the people on that Day: their perception of time will be distorted by the overwhelming reality of the Hereafter. They will say to one another, "We did not remain (in the world or in the grave) except for a short while — ten days at most." This is not a statement of certainty, but a reflection of their confusion and the brevity of worldly life when compared to the eternal realities that now unfold before their eyes.

The verse serves as a profound reminder for us in this life: the world, with all its pursuits, pleasures, and trials, is but a fleeting moment in the grand scheme of existence. When we stand before Allah on that Day, our time in this world will seem like a mere blink of an eye. Yet, how we spend those moments determines our eternal fate.

Dear reader, let this verse awaken your heart. Do not be deceived by the length of your days or the abundance of your years. Life is short, and the Hereafter is eternal. Use your time wisely — in worship, in goodness, in seeking knowledge, and in preparing for that Day when you too will whisper among others, realizing how brief your stay truly was. Let not the world distract you from your ultimate purpose, for the wise one is he who lives for the everlasting life, not the transient one. May Allah grant us the ability to see the truth clearly and to act upon it before the Day when regrets will be of no avail.
