Translation — Tafsir

Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • ʿAnat (وَعَنَتِ): Subdued, humbled, and brought low in submission.
  • Al-Wujūh (الْوُجُوهُ): The faces — referring to the faces of all creation, especially the disobedient.
  • Al-Ḥayy (الْحَيّ): The Ever-Living — the One who possesses perfect, eternal life that never ends.
  • Al-Qayyūm (الْقَيُّوم): The Self-Sustaining Sustainer — the One who manages and governs all affairs of His creation without needing anyone.
  • Khāba (خَابَ): Failed, lost, and suffered utter ruin.
  • Ẓulm (ظُلْم): Injustice — and in this context, the greatest injustice of all: shirk (associating partners with Allah).

The Interpretation:

On the Day of Resurrection, every face will be humbled and cast down in utter submission before the Ever-Living, the Self-Sustaining Sustainer — the One whose life is perfect and eternal, who never dies, and who alone manages the affairs of all that exists. No one will dare to raise their head in pride; every creature, whether obedient or rebellious, will bow in total humility before His majesty and power.

And in that moment of absolute truth, the losers will be fully exposed. Those who carried the burden of injustice — meaning those who committed shirk by worshipping anything or anyone alongside Allah — will have failed completely. Their hopes will be shattered, their deeds will be worthless, and their end will be utter loss. For the greatest injustice a soul can commit is to direct worship to other than the One who alone deserves it.

This verse reminds us that all pride, arrogance, and false worship will vanish on that Day. Only the truth will stand: Allah is the Living, the Sustainer, and to Him alone belongs all glory. So let us purify our hearts from every form of hidden shirk — whether it be showing off in deeds, loving status more than Allah, or relying on created beings instead of the Creator. Let us return to Him in humility now, before that Day when every face will be humbled whether it likes it or not. Indeed, the one who submits to Allah in this life will find peace and honor, while the one who carries the burden of injustice will find only loss and regret.

📜 Verse 109-113 — Taha

That Day, no intercession will benefit except [that of] one to whom the Most Merciful has given permission and has accepted his word.
Allah knows what is [presently] before them and what will be after them, but they do not encompass it in knowledge.
And [all] faces will be humbled before the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of existence. And he will have failed who carries injustice.
But he who does of righteous deeds while he is a believer - he will neither fear injustice nor deprivation.
And thus We have sent it down as an Arabic Qur'an and have diversified therein the warnings that perhaps they will avoid [sin] or it would cause them remembrance.
