Word Meanings:

  • "Ma bayna aydihim" (مَا بَيْنَ أَيْدِيهِمْ): What is before them — i.e., the affairs of the Hereafter and the Day of Judgment that lie ahead.
  • "Ma khalfahum" (مَا خَلْفَهُمْ): What is behind them — i.e., the affairs of this worldly life that they have left behind or are currently experiencing.
  • "La yuhituna bihi 'ilma" (لَا يُحِيطُونَ بِهِ عِلْمًا): They cannot encompass Him with knowledge — i.e., no created being can fully comprehend Allah’s essence, attributes, or infinite wisdom.

Explanation of the Verse:

This noble verse reveals the absolute and all-encompassing knowledge of Allah Almighty, and it comes as a profound comfort and reassurance to the believers. Allah tells us that He knows what is before them — meaning the complete reality of the Day of Resurrection, the Hour, the Reckoning, Paradise, and Hellfire — and He knows what is behind them — meaning all their deeds, secrets, and circumstances in this worldly life, past and present. Nothing escapes His knowledge, whether it occurred long ago, is happening now, or will happen in the future. Every breath, every thought, every hidden intention is fully known to Him.

At the same time, the verse establishes a beautiful and humbling truth: no created being can ever encompass Allah with their knowledge. His Essence, His attributes, His wisdom, and His decree are far beyond the reach of human intellect. We can know Him through His names, His signs, and His revelation, but we can never fully grasp His infinite reality. This is not a limitation to be saddened by — rather, it is a sign of His majesty and greatness. Just as a tiny drop cannot contain the ocean, our finite minds cannot contain the infinite Creator.

This verse carries a powerful message for every soul: since Allah knows everything about you — your struggles, your hidden tears, your silent prayers, your unspoken fears — you are never alone. He sees what no one else sees and knows what no one else knows. So turn to Him with complete trust, knowing that the One who holds all knowledge is the Most Merciful, the Most Just, and the Most Wise.

And let this verse also instill in you a sense of awe and reverence: the Creator is far greater than anything your mind can imagine. When you stand in prayer, remember that you are standing before the One whose knowledge encompasses all things, and whose wisdom surpasses all understanding. This awareness should fill your heart with humility, love, and a deep desire to draw closer to Him through obedience and sincere worship. Indeed, the more you realize how little you know, the more you appreciate how much He knows — and that is the beginning of true faith and inner peace.

That Day, everyone will follow [the call of] the Caller [with] no deviation therefrom, and [all] voices will be stilled before the Most Merciful, so you will not hear except a whisper [of footsteps].
109يَوْمَئِذٍ لَّا تَنفَعُ الشَّفَاعَةُ إِلَّا مَنْ أَذِنَ لَهُ الرَّحْمَٰنُ وَرَضِيَ لَهُ قَوْلًا
That Day, no intercession will benefit except [that of] one to whom the Most Merciful has given permission and has accepted his word.
