📖 English Meaning
The Day when We will fold the heaven like the folding of a [written] sheet for the records. As We began the first creation, We will repeat it. [That is] a promise binding upon Us. Indeed, We will do it.

Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Natwi (نَطْوِي): We fold or roll up, like rolling a scroll.
  • As-Sijill (السِّجِلّ): The scroll or parchment upon which writing is inscribed.
  • Lil-Kutub (لِلْكُتُبِ): For the writings; meaning the scroll is folded together with what is written on it.
  • Nu'iduhu (نُّعِيدُهُ): We bring it back or restore it.

Tafsir (Explanation):

On that Day, the heavens will be folded up by the Almighty's power, just as a scroll is rolled up with all its writings sealed within it. The stars will be extinguished, the celestial bodies will be dismantled, and the entire universe as we know it will be rolled away, erasing all its traces. This is a scene of absolute divine majesty, reminding every soul that the Creator who stretched out the heavens with His might is fully capable of folding them back in an instant.

Then comes the profound promise: "Just as We began the first creation, We shall repeat it." This is a direct and emphatic affirmation of the resurrection. The same Allah who brought you into existence from nothing—from a drop of fluid, from dust—has the power to bring you back to life after death. This is not a new creation but a restoration, a return to the original state, as easily as the first time. It is a promise that carries both hope and accountability: hope for the believers who long to meet their Lord, and accountability for those who denied His power.

This is not an empty vow. Allah states: "A promise binding upon Us. Indeed, We are doers." It is a binding commitment from the Most Merciful, the Most Just. He does not break His promises, and His word is absolute truth. He has decreed it, and His decree is always executed.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, let this verse awaken your heart. The One who created the heavens and the earth, who spread them out as a magnificent canopy, will fold them up like a worn-out garment. Nothing in this universe is permanent—only His Face endures. So where is your attachment? Where is your striving? If the heavens themselves will be rolled away, then what value do the fleeting pleasures of this world hold?

This verse is a reminder that your life is not a random accident. You were created with purpose, and you will be returned to your Creator. The resurrection is certain, and it is a day when every deed, every intention, and every hidden thought will be brought to light. So prepare for that Day while you still have time. Turn to Allah in repentance, hold fast to His guidance, and live a life that pleases Him. For the One who promises resurrection is the One who never fails in His promise—and He is fully capable of fulfilling it.
