Word Meanings:

  • Aḥassū (أَحَسُّوا): They perceived, sensed, or became aware of something with certainty.
  • Ba'sanā (بَأْسَنَا): Our severe punishment, might, or destructive power.
  • Yarkuḍūn (يَرْكُضُونَ): They flee hastily, running at full speed in panic.

Tafsir (Explanation):

When these wicked, oppressive people finally sensed the approach of Our severe punishment — the very moment its first signs became undeniable and its destructive force began to close in on them — they were seized by sheer terror. Instantly, they broke into a frantic dash, fleeing their own town in a desperate attempt to escape the inevitable doom that had come upon them.

This verse paints a vivid scene of the last moments of those who rejected the truth. They had spent their lives in arrogance, mockery, and defiance, believing they were secure in their power and wealth. But when the punishment of Allah arrived — whether through a mighty blast, a devastating storm, or another form of divine retribution — all their false confidence evaporated. Their flight was utterly futile, for no place on earth could shield them from the decree of their Lord. The very town they once called home, where they felt invincible, became the very place from which they scrambled to escape — but there was nowhere to run.

This carries a profound lesson for every soul: do not wait until the signs of punishment appear before turning back to Allah. The time to repent is now, while the door of mercy is still open. When the punishment comes, it will not wait for anyone, and no amount of running or scheming will avail. Yet, Allah — in His infinite mercy — has sent us this warning through His Book and His Messenger ﷺ so that we may never find ourselves in such a desperate state. Let this verse be a wake-up call: return to your Lord with a sincere heart before you find yourself fleeing from what you cannot escape. The One who created you loves you more than a mother loves her child, and He has given you the gift of today to seek His forgiveness and reform your ways. Seize it, for tomorrow may be too late.

📜 Verse 10-14 — Al-Anbiya

We have certainly sent down to you a Book in which is your mention. Then will you not reason?
And how many a city which was unjust have We shattered and produced after it another people.
And when its inhabitants perceived Our punishment, at once they fled from it.
[Some angels said], "Do not flee but return to where you were given luxury and to your homes - perhaps you will be questioned."
They said, "O woe to us! Indeed, we were wrongdoers."
