Word Meanings:

  • Yā Waylanā (يَا وَيْلَنَا): An expression of utter distress and ruin, meaning "O our destruction!" or "Woe to us!" It is a cry of despair and self-condemnation.
  • Ẓālimīn (ظَالِمِينَ): Wrongdoers, those who have transgressed against themselves and others by committing injustice, particularly through disbelief and disobedience to Allah.

Explanation of the Verse:

When the punishment of Allah descended upon the people of the towns who rejected the truth, and they found themselves surrounded by destruction, they had no defense and no escape. Their only response was an admission of guilt, crying out: "O our ruin! Indeed, we were wrongdoers." They acknowledged that they had wronged themselves through their persistent disbelief, their arrogance toward the messengers, and their rejection of the clear signs of Allah. This confession, however, came at a moment when it could no longer save them—when the decree of punishment had already been fulfilled, and the doors of repentance had closed. It was a recognition of their own injustice, but one that bore no benefit, for it was made in the throes of despair, not in sincere, timely repentance.

A Call to Reflection:

This verse carries a profound lesson for every soul: the tragedy of those who wait until calamity strikes before they recognize their own wrongdoing. How many of us delay turning back to Allah, thinking we have time, only to realize too late that the opportunity has slipped away? The people of these towns confessed their injustice, but their confession was useless—it was not accompanied by faith, nor did it come before the punishment. Dear reader, Allah, in His infinite mercy, has left the door of repentance open for you *now*, while you still have breath in your body and a beating heart. He calls you to turn to Him before the moment arrives when your words of regret will be met with silence. Do not let your confession be like theirs—uttered when it is too late. Seize this precious moment, return to your Lord with a sincere heart, and let your life be a testimony of justice and faith, not a tale of regret. For Allah is the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful, and He delights in the repentance of His servants.

📜 Verse 12-16 — Al-Anbiya

And when its inhabitants perceived Our punishment, at once they fled from it.
[Some angels said], "Do not flee but return to where you were given luxury and to your homes - perhaps you will be questioned."
They said, "O woe to us! Indeed, we were wrongdoers."
And that declaration of theirs did not cease until We made them [as] a harvest [mowed down], extinguished [like a fire].
And We did not create the heaven and earth and that between them in play.
