Word Meanings:
- Subḥānahu (سُبْحَانَهُ): Glory be to Him; declaring Him far above and free from any imperfection or false attribution.
- Mukramūn (مُكْرَمُونَ): Honored, dignified, and held in high esteem; those who are favored and respected.
Tafsir (Explanation):
The polytheists of Makkah, in their ignorance, claimed that the Most Merciful (Ar-Raḥmān) had taken a son, alleging that the angels were His daughters. This was a grave and false accusation, born from their misguided imagination and their habit of attributing to Allah what they themselves considered noble in their own limited, human terms.
Allah, the Exalted, declares Himself absolutely free from such a claim. He is far above needing a child, for He is the Self-Sufficient, the Creator of all, and nothing resembles Him. The Qur’an responds to this falsehood with a decisive correction: the angels are not His offspring, but rather honored servants. They are created beings, completely devoted to His worship, obedient to His command, and exalted in His sight. Their status is one of servitude and honor, not of sonship or daughterhood. They do not speak or act except by His permission, and they glorify Him day and night without tiring.
This verse beautifully teaches us the true relationship between the Creator and His creation. The highest rank any being can attain is not to be called a "son" or "daughter" of Allah, but to be a devoted and honored servant of His. The angels, despite their immense power and closeness to Allah, are described here as *ʿibād* (servants) — a title of honor and humility. This is a profound lesson for humanity: our nobility lies not in claiming kinship with Allah, but in sincere submission, worship, and obedience to Him.
Let this verse inspire you, dear reader, to reflect on the greatness of Allah and the purity of His nature. He is the Most Merciful, yet He is far above any human or angelic attributes. The path to His pleasure is open to all who humble themselves in servitude, for He honors those who honor Him through faith and righteous deeds. Embrace this beautiful truth, and let it draw you closer to the One who created you, sustains you, and loves for you to know Him as He truly is — the One, the Unique, the Most High.
