Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Juthadhan (جُذَاذًا): Fragments, broken pieces, or crushed bits of something.
- Kabeeran (كَبِيرًا): The biggest or the chief one (referring to the main idol).
- La’allahum ilayhi yarji’oon (لَعَلَّهُمْ إِلَيْهِ يَرْجِعُونَ): So that they might return to it (i.e., turn back to the big idol and ask it).
Tafsir (Explanation):
After Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) had made his stand against his people’s idolatry and challenged their blind following, he carried out a decisive act to awaken their minds. He smashed all the idols into tiny fragments, leaving only the largest one intact. He did not destroy the chief idol deliberately, but rather left it hanging—perhaps with the axe placed near it—so that when his people returned, they would turn to that big idol and ask it: “Who did this to you?”
This was a brilliant and profound strategy. Ibrahim wanted to expose the absurdity of worshipping lifeless stones. If the big idol could not speak, could not defend itself, and could not reveal who broke the others, then how could it be a god worthy of worship? By leaving the largest idol untouched, Ibrahim forced his people to confront the reality that these idols were powerless—unable to protect themselves, let alone their worshippers. This was a decisive proof against them, leaving them with no excuse. Their own logic would condemn them, and their silence would be an admission of their folly.
A Da’wah Reflection for the Reader:
This story is not merely a historical account—it is a timeless lesson in calling people to the truth with wisdom and courage. Ibrahim’s approach teaches us that falsehood, no matter how grand or deeply rooted, is ultimately fragile. When we stand for the truth with sincerity and intelligence, Allah grants us the ability to dismantle falsehood in ways that leave people with no argument.
Notice how Ibrahim did not just argue—he acted, but his action was calculated to make his people think. He gave them a chance to question their own beliefs. As Muslims, we are called to invite others to Islam with the same spirit: with clarity, patience, and a method that appeals to reason and conscience. And just as Allah protected Ibrahim and made his mission successful, He will support those who strive in His cause.
Let this verse inspire you to trust in Allah when you stand for the truth, even if you stand alone. The idols of our time—whether they are material desires, false ideologies, or blind traditions—can all be shattered by the light of faith and reason. And when you leave the “big idol” of falsehood exposed, let it be so that people see its emptiness and turn back to the One True God, the Creator of all things.
