Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • آلِهَتِنَا (our gods): Their idols and statues that they worshipped besides Allah.
  • الظَّالِمِينَ (the wrongdoers): Those who transgress beyond proper bounds, committing injustice and aggression.

Tafsir (Explanation):

When the people returned to their temple, they were shocked and enraged to find their idols shattered into pieces. The great statues they had revered, honored, and devoted themselves to for so long lay broken and humiliated on the ground. In their fury and confusion, they turned to one another and asked: "Who has done this to our gods? Surely, whoever has done this is among the wrongdoers."

Their accusation reveals the depth of their ignorance and misguidance. They called the one who destroyed their idols a "wrongdoer," while in truth, the real wrongdoing was their own—worshipping lifeless stones that could neither benefit nor harm them, nor even protect themselves from being broken. The one who smashed those idols was, in fact, a caller to truth and justice, while they were the ones persisting in injustice by associating partners with Allah, the Creator of the heavens and the earth.

Notice how they defended their false gods with such zeal, yet they never defended the rights of the orphans, the poor, or the oppressed among them. They were quick to label anyone who touched their idols as a criminal, but they remained silent in the face of widespread corruption and tyranny. This is the state of those who cling to falsehood—they magnify what is insignificant and neglect what is truly significant.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, reflect on this scene and ask yourself: Where do you place your reverence and devotion? Are you like those people who defended stones that could not even defend themselves? Or are you among those who submit to the One who hears every prayer, sees every tear, and responds to every call? The idols of our time are not made of stone—they are the desires, wealth, status, and worldly attachments that we elevate above the command of Allah. When we prioritize these over our Creator, we fall into the very same error that these people fell into.

The Qur'an invites you to free yourself from every false object of worship and to direct your heart solely to Allah—the Living, the Self-Sustaining, the One who never sleeps, never fails, and never abandons those who turn to Him. He is the One who deserves all honor, all reverence, and all devotion. So be among those who break the idols of ignorance and falsehood, and who stand firm upon the truth, for the truth is what remains when all else crumbles.

📜 Verse 57-61 — Al-Anbiya

And [I swear] by Allah, I will surely plan against your idols after you have turned and gone away."
So he made them into fragments, except a large one among them, that they might return to it [and question].
They said, "Who has done this to our gods? Indeed, he is of the wrongdoers."
They said, "We heard a young man mention them who is called Abraham."
They said, "Then bring him before the eyes of the people that they may testify."
