Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • نُكِسُوا (Nukisū): They were turned back or reversed, meaning their minds were flipped back to their previous state of stubbornness and denial.
  • عَلَىٰ رُءُوسِهِمْ (ʿAlā Ruʾūsihim): Literally "upon their heads," an idiom meaning they were thrown back into their old way of thinking—head over heels into confusion and arrogance.
  • لَقَدْ عَلِمْتَ (Laqad ʿAlimta): "You have certainly known" or "You are fully aware."
  • مَا هَٰؤُلَاءِ يَنطِقُونَ (Mā Hāʾulāʾi Yanṭiqūn): "These do not speak" — referring to the idols that cannot utter a single word.

Tafsir (Explanation):

After Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) had silenced his people with his powerful argument—when he pointed out that the largest idol was the one who broke the others, and they themselves admitted, "You know these do not speak"—their arrogance and stubbornness quickly resurfaced. They were "turned on their heads," meaning their brief moment of clarity and admission of truth was overturned, and they plunged back into their blind obstinacy.

In their desperate attempt to escape the force of Ibrahim's logic, they said: "You already know, O Ibrahim, that these idols cannot speak. So how can you ask us to question them?" They tried to use his own knowledge against him, but in doing so, they only proved his point further. By acknowledging that the idols were mute and powerless, they unknowingly confirmed the very truth Ibrahim was calling them to: that these carved stones were unworthy of worship, and that only Allah—the All-Hearing, All-Speaking Creator—deserves their devotion.

Their words were meant to be a defense, but they became a confession. Their own tongues testified against them, and their argument collapsed into self-defeating folly.

A Daʿwah Reflection:

This scene from the life of Prophet Ibrahim is a timeless lesson in the power of truth and the weakness of falsehood. When people are confronted with clear evidence, their initial reaction may be to accept it, but pride and habit often pull them back into denial. Yet, as we see here, even their attempts to argue against the truth only expose the emptiness of their position.

For us as believers, this story teaches us to trust in the clarity of Allah's message. The truth is self-evident, and when we present it with wisdom and sincerity, even the most stubborn hearts are left with no real argument—only stubbornness. And just as Ibrahim remained patient, firm, and compassionate in his call, we too should invite others to the beauty of Islam with confidence, knowing that Allah is with those who strive in His cause. The idols of our time—whether material desires, false ideologies, or hollow traditions—are just as mute and powerless as those stones. Only Allah speaks, hears, and guides. So turn to Him, and let your heart find peace in the One who answers every call.

📜 Verse 63-67 — Al-Anbiya

63قَالَ بَلْ فَعَلَهُ كَبِيرُهُمْ هَٰذَا فَاسْأَلُوهُمْ إِن كَانُوا يَنطِقُونَ
He said, "Rather, this - the largest of them - did it, so ask them, if they should [be able to] speak."
64فَرَجَعُوا إِلَىٰ أَنفُسِهِمْ فَقَالُوا إِنَّكُمْ أَنتُمُ الظَّالِمُونَ
So they returned to [blaming] themselves and said [to each other], "Indeed, you are the wrongdoers."
65ثُمَّ نُكِسُوا عَلَىٰ رُءُوسِهِمْ لَقَدْ عَلِمْتَ مَا هَٰؤُلَاءِ يَنطِقُونَ
Then they reversed themselves, [saying], "You have already known that these do not speak!"
66قَالَ أَفَتَعْبُدُونَ مِن دُونِ اللَّهِ مَا لَا يَنفَعُكُمْ شَيْئًا وَلَا يَضُرُّكُمْ
He said, "Then do you worship instead of Allah that which does not benefit you at all or harm you?
67أُفٍّ لَّكُمْ وَلِمَا تَعْبُدُونَ مِن دُونِ اللَّهِ ۖ أَفَلَا تَعْقِلُونَ
Uff to you and to what you worship instead of Allah. Then will you not use reason?"
