Word Meanings:

They turned back to themselves, meaning they reflected inwardly and consulted their own reason and conscience.
The wrongdoers, those who have committed injustice against themselves by associating partners with Allah.

Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse captures a profound moment of awakening and self-accountability. After Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) had shattered the idols and left the axe with the largest one, the people returned to find their gods in ruins. At first, they asked who had done this, and Ibrahim pointed to the chief idol, challenging them to ask it. When they realized the idols could not speak or defend themselves, a sudden clarity struck them.

They turned back to their own selves — their minds, their consciences, their innate nature (fitrah) — and in that moment of honest reflection, they could not escape the truth. They said to one another: "Indeed, you are the wrongdoers." This was an admission that their worship of these lifeless stones was an injustice — not only against themselves, but against the very purpose of their existence. They recognized that they had been worshipping things that could neither benefit nor harm them, that could not speak, hear, or see.

This is a powerful lesson for every human being: the moment we turn inward with sincerity, the truth becomes undeniable. The fitrah — the natural disposition Allah placed in every soul — knows that worship belongs to the One who created, sustains, and answers. The idols of our time may not be stones, but they can be wealth, status, desires, or anything that takes precedence over Allah in our hearts. When we pause and reflect, our own conscience bears witness against us if we have placed anything above our Creator.

The beauty of this verse is that it shows how even those deeply entrenched in falsehood can, for a moment, see the truth clearly when they return to their pure nature. This is an invitation for us all: to regularly return to ourselves, to reflect on our priorities, and to ensure that our worship — in all its forms — is directed solely to Allah, the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing, who never fails those who call upon Him.

A Da'wah Reflection:

Dear reader, this verse carries a timeless call: do not let your heart remain heedless. Take a moment today to return to yourself — to ask: What do I truly worship? What occupies my mind, my time, my energy? If the answer is anything other than Allah, then this verse is a gentle yet firm reminder that the first step to correction is honest self-awareness. The people of Ibrahim admitted their wrong, and though many later persisted in error, this moment of truth remains a proof against them. Let it be a proof for you instead — a reason to turn back to Allah, the Most Merciful, who welcomes every returning servant with open arms. Indeed, He is the One who deserves all worship, and He alone can answer when you call.

They said, "Have you done this to our gods, O Abraham?"
He said, "Rather, this - the largest of them - did it, so ask them, if they should [be able to] speak."
So they returned to [blaming] themselves and said [to each other], "Indeed, you are the wrongdoers."
Then they reversed themselves, [saying], "You have already known that these do not speak!"
He said, "Then do you worship instead of Allah that which does not benefit you at all or harm you?
