Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Khasman (خَصْمَانِ): Two opposing parties or adversaries.
- Ikh'tasamu (اخْتَصَمُوا): They disputed or contended with one another.
- Qutti'at (قُطِّعَتْ): Were cut out, tailored, or prepared (in the sense of being made ready for them).
- Thiyab (ثِيَابٌ): Garments or clothing.
- Al-Hamim (الْحَمِيمُ): Boiling water that has reached the utmost degree of heat.
The Interpretation:
These two groups—the believers and the disbelievers—are adversaries who have disputed concerning their Lord. Each claims to be upon the truth: the believers affirm the Oneness of Allah and His perfect attributes, while the disbelievers deny His divinity and reject His messengers. This dispute is not a mere intellectual exercise; it is a matter of eternal consequence, for the outcome of this conflict determines one's destiny in the Hereafter.
For those who rejected faith, their punishment is described in vivid, terrifying terms. Garments of fire have been tailored for them—clothing that clings to their bodies and surrounds them completely, just as ordinary garments surround the wearer. But unlike earthly clothing that provides comfort and protection, these garments of flame will scorch their skin and penetrate their very beings. The fire does not merely touch them from the outside; it embraces them entirely, leaving no part of their bodies untouched.
Moreover, from above their heads, boiling water—water that has reached the absolute peak of heat—will be poured upon them. This scalding liquid will descend upon their scalps, melting their internal organs and causing their skin to fall away. The torment is comprehensive: fire from below and boiling water from above, enclosing them in a suffocating embrace of agony. This is the just recompense for those who knew the truth yet turned away from it, and who disputed concerning their Lord without knowledge or guidance.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, pause and reflect upon this profound truth: the dispute between truth and falsehood is not a distant historical event—it is a living reality that continues today. Every person must choose which side they stand upon. The believers, who submit to their Lord with sincerity and follow His guidance, will find mercy, gardens of delight, and eternal bliss. But those who persist in disbelief and arrogance will face this unimaginable punishment.
Yet Allah, in His infinite mercy, has not left you without guidance. He has sent His messengers, revealed His books, and made the path of truth clear. The very fact that you are reading these words is an opportunity—a moment to reflect upon your relationship with your Creator. Do not wait until the garments of fire are prepared for you. Turn to Allah now, with a sincere heart, and embrace the faith that brings peace in this life and salvation in the next. The doors of repentance are open, and Allah's mercy encompasses all things. Choose the path of the believers, and you will find a reward beyond your imagination—gardens beneath which rivers flow, where you will dwell forever in the company of the righteous.
