Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Tadh-halu (تَذْهَلُ): To forget, neglect, or become oblivious due to overwhelming shock or fear.
  • Murdi'ah (مُرْضِعَة): A nursing mother who is currently breastfeeding her infant.
  • Dhati haml (ذَاتِ حَمْلٍ): A pregnant woman carrying a child in her womb.
  • Sukara (سُكَارَى): Intoxicated or drunk, as if from wine or strong drink.

Tafsir (Explanation):

On that terrifying Day—the Day of the Hour—when you witness the great earthquake and the horrors of the Resurrection, every nursing mother will completely forget the infant she is breastfeeding. Even if her child is at her breast at that very moment, she will abandon it in utter distraction, overwhelmed by the sheer terror of what she sees. Pregnant women will miscarry their unborn children from the intensity of the fear and shock that seizes their hearts. And when you look at the people, you will see them reeling and staggering as though they were drunk—yet they are not drunk from any intoxicating drink. Rather, the punishment of Allah is so severe and its terror so overwhelming that it has stripped them of their senses, clouded their minds, and robbed them of their reason and discernment.

This verse paints a vivid picture of the Day of Judgment's opening moments—a day so catastrophic that the most powerful natural instincts of a mother, her love and care for her child, are completely erased by fear. The bond between a mother and her nursing infant is among the strongest in human nature, yet on that Day, it means nothing. The pregnant woman, who carries new life within her, will lose that life in an instant. And the people, though not intoxicated, will appear as if they are, because their minds have been overwhelmed by the magnitude of what they witness.

This is not merely a description of physical events; it is a profound call to reflection. If the mere beginning of Allah's punishment can cause such chaos and confusion, then how great must the full reality of His wrath be? Yet, Allah, in His infinite mercy, has sent us this warning in advance—not to frighten us into despair, but to awaken our hearts and guide us back to Him. He tells us of these events so that we may prepare ourselves, turn to Him in repentance, and seek His protection through faith and righteous deeds.

The severity of that Day is a reminder of Allah's justice and power, but it is also a testament to His love for us. He does not wish to destroy us; He wishes to save us. He gives us this life as a chance to know Him, to worship Him, and to earn His eternal pleasure. So let this verse be a wake-up call—a gentle but firm nudge to examine our lives, prioritize what truly matters, and build a relationship with our Creator before that Day arrives when no mother will remember her child, and no soul will be able to help another. The path to safety is open now; the door of repentance is wide. Do not wait until it is too late.

1يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ اتَّقُوا رَبَّكُمْ ۚ إِنَّ زَلْزَلَةَ السَّاعَةِ شَيْءٌ عَظِيمٌ
O mankind, fear your Lord. Indeed, the convulsion of the [final] Hour is a terrible thing.
On the Day you see it every nursing mother will be distracted from that [child] she was nursing, and every pregnant woman will abort her pregnancy, and you will see the people [appearing] intoxicated while they are not intoxicated; but the punishment of Allah is severe.
3وَمِنَ النَّاسِ مَن يُجَادِلُ فِي اللَّهِ بِغَيْرِ عِلْمٍ وَيَتَّبِعُ كُلَّ شَيْطَانٍ مَّرِيدٍ
And of the people is he who disputes about Allah without knowledge and follows every rebellious devil.
4كُتِبَ عَلَيْهِ أَنَّهُ مَن تَوَلَّاهُ فَأَنَّهُ يُضِلُّهُ وَيَهْدِيهِ إِلَىٰ عَذَابِ السَّعِيرِ
It has been decreed for every devil that whoever turns to him - he will misguide him and will lead him to the punishment of the Blaze.
