And they urge you to hasten the punishment. But Allah will never fail in His promise. And indeed, a day with your Lord is like a thousand years of those which you count.

Translation — Tafsir

Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • Yasta'jilūnaka (يَسْتَعْجِلُونَكَ): They ask you to hasten or bring forward something prematurely.
  • Al-'Adhāb (الْعَذَابِ): The punishment or torment, whether in this world or the Hereafter.
  • Yukh'lifa (يُخْلِفَ): To break or go against a promise.
  • Wa'dahu (وَعْدَهُ): His promise — referring to Allah's promise of punishment for the disbelievers.
  • Yawm (يَوْمًا): A day; here, a day of punishment in the Hereafter.
  • 'Inda Rabbika (عِندَ رَبِّكَ): In the sight or reckoning of your Lord.
  • Ka'alfi sanah (كَأَلْفِ سَنَةٍ): Like a thousand years.
  • Mimmā ta'uddūn (مِمَّا تَعُدُّونَ): Of what you count — i.e., the years you calculate in this worldly life.

Explanation of the Verse:

The disbelievers of Quraysh, driven by arrogance and ignorance, mockingly challenge you, O Prophet, to bring the punishment you warn them about — both the worldly punishment and the one in the Hereafter. They say, "If what you say is true, then why doesn't this punishment come upon us now?" This is a sign of their stubbornness and lack of faith, for they treat the warnings of Allah as if they were a joke.

But Allah reassures you and all believers: His promise is true and unbreakable. He will never fail to fulfill what He has decreed — the punishment for those who persist in disbelief and oppression. Indeed, a portion of that promised punishment was already hastened for them at the Battle of Badr, where they tasted humiliation and defeat. And the greater punishment awaits them in the Hereafter.

Then Allah draws attention to a profound reality: one day of punishment in the Hereafter is equivalent to a thousand years of what you count in this worldly life. This is not merely about the length of time, but about the intensity and severity of that day. Imagine a single day of such torment that it feels like a thousand years of suffering — how then can they mockingly ask for it to be hastened? They are, in their ignorance, calling for something far more terrifying than they can comprehend.

This verse teaches us a vital lesson: Allah's timing is not like our timing. What seems delayed to us is perfectly timed in His infinite wisdom. The Hereafter is real, its punishments are severe, and no one can escape it. So instead of mocking or rushing, we should reflect, repent, and prepare for that day which will be unlike any day we have ever known.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, this verse is a gentle yet powerful reminder of the reality of the Hereafter. The disbelievers asked for the punishment out of mockery, but the believer asks for mercy and forgiveness. Allah's promise of reward for the righteous is just as true as His promise of punishment for the wicked. So let us not be like those who demand signs or rush the unseen — rather, let us be among those who prepare for the Day when a single moment will weigh heavier than a thousand years of worldly life. That Day is coming, and the wise one is he who meets it with faith, good deeds, and a heart turned to Allah. May Allah make us among those who are saved on that Day, and may He grant us the sweetness of His mercy over the bitterness of His punishment.

📜 Verse 45-49 — Al-Hajj

And how many a city did We destroy while it was committing wrong - so it is [now] fallen into ruin - and [how many] an abandoned well and [how many] a lofty palace.
So have they not traveled through the earth and have hearts by which to reason and ears by which to hear? For indeed, it is not eyes that are blinded, but blinded are the hearts which are within the breasts.
And they urge you to hasten the punishment. But Allah will never fail in His promise. And indeed, a day with your Lord is like a thousand years of those which you count.
And for how many a city did I prolong enjoyment while it was committing wrong. Then I seized it, and to Me is the [final] destination.
Say, "O people, I am only to you a clear warner."
