Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- وَكَأَيِّن مِّن قَرْيَةٍ — "And how many a town/city" — meaning many towns and their inhabitants.
- أَمْلَيْتُ لَهَا — "I gave them respite" — I delayed their punishment and granted them extra time.
- ظَالِمَةٌ — "wrongdoing" — persisting in disbelief, injustice, and transgression.
- أَخَذْتُهَا — "I seized them" — I punished them with a decisive, destructive punishment.
- وَإِلَيَّ الْمَصِيرُ — "And to Me is the final return" — all creation returns to Allah for judgment.
Tafsir (Explanation):
How many towns and civilizations were there—flourishing, powerful, and deeply entrenched in wrongdoing—whose people persisted in disbelief and injustice! They rejected the messengers, oppressed the weak, and spread corruption on earth. Yet, Allah, in His infinite mercy and perfect wisdom, did not hasten their punishment. He granted them respite, giving them time, perhaps to reflect, repent, and return to Him. But instead of gratitude and humility, they grew more arrogant, deceived by the delay and thinking they were safe.
Then, at the precise moment determined by Allah’s wisdom, His punishment seized them suddenly and decisively—leaving no trace of their power or pride. And after that destruction, their final destination is not the grave alone; it is the return to Allah Himself, where every soul will stand before Him and be held fully accountable for every action, every word, and every intention.
This verse carries a profound lesson for every generation: Allah’s patience is vast, but His justice is certain. No one escapes His knowledge, and no delay means neglect. The respite you see around you—whether in your own life or in the world at large—is not a sign of approval; it is an opportunity. Seize it before it slips away, and turn to your Lord in sincere repentance before the moment arrives when repentance will no longer be accepted.
Da‘wah Reflection:
Dear reader, do not be deceived by the apparent success of those who persist in wrongdoing, nor by the delay of punishment in your own life. Allah’s mercy is greater than your sins, and His door of repentance is open until the very last moment. But that moment is unknown to you. Today, right now, is the best time to return to Him—to pray, to seek forgiveness, and to align your life with His guidance. The Qur’an is not merely a book to recite; it is a living call to salvation. Respond to it, and you will find peace in this life and success in the next. For indeed, to Allah is the final return—and what a beautiful return it is for those who come to Him with a pure heart!
