📖 English Meaning
So have they not traveled through the earth and have hearts by which to reason and ears by which to hear? For indeed, it is not eyes that are blinded, but blinded are the hearts which are within the breasts.

Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Qulūb (قُلُوبٌ): Hearts, the seat of intellect and understanding.
  • Yaʿqilūn (يَعْقِلُونَ): They reason, comprehend, and grasp the truth.
  • Ādhān (آذَانٌ): Ears, meaning the faculty of hearing that leads to reflection.
  • Taʿmā (تَعْمَى): Becomes blind, loses sight.
  • Abṣār (الأَبْصَارُ): Physical eyes/sight.
  • Ṣudūr (الصُّدُورِ): Chests, the place where hearts reside.

Tafsir (Explanation):

Have these deniers of the truth not traveled through the earth and witnessed with their own eyes the ruined dwellings of past nations—people who were mightier in power, richer in wealth, and more advanced in civilization? Did they not see how those nations were destroyed because of their arrogance and rejection of their prophets? If they had truly reflected, they would have found in these ruins the clearest lessons. They would have developed hearts capable of reasoning—hearts that distinguish between truth and falsehood, and ears that truly listen—not just to the sounds of words, but to the essence of wisdom and admonition.

The verse then delivers a profound and timeless truth: "For indeed, it is not the eyes that become blind, but rather the hearts within the chests that become blind." This means that physical sight is not the real problem. Many people see the same signs, the same ruins, the same verses of the Qur’an, yet they remain unmoved. Their eyes are open, but their hearts are sealed. The true blindness—the destructive, fatal blindness—is the blindness of the heart, the inability to perceive the truth, to learn from history, and to submit to the Creator.

This verse is a gentle yet powerful call to every human being: open your heart, not just your eyes. Travel, observe, reflect, and listen with the intention of learning. The Qur’an repeatedly invites us to use our intellect and our senses as gates to faith. The universe is a book of signs, and history is a witness to divine justice. Those who refuse to read these signs are not victims of weak eyesight, but of a hardened heart.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, this verse is an invitation to you personally. It asks: Have you not seen how nations that once flourished have been reduced to stories and ruins? Have you not heard how tyrants who denied their Lord were brought low? Your heart is your most precious gift—do not let it become blind. Let it see the light of faith, let it feel the sweetness of submission to Allah, and let it respond to the call of the Qur’an. The path to success in this life and the Hereafter begins with a seeing heart. So, open your heart today, for the One who created you is calling you to His mercy and guidance. Do not wait until the signs are gone and the time for reflection has passed. Embrace the truth now, and let your heart be among those that see.

📜 Verse 44-48 — Al-Hajj

And the inhabitants of Madyan. And Moses was denied, so I prolonged enjoyment for the disbelievers; then I seized them, and how [terrible] was My reproach.
And how many a city did We destroy while it was committing wrong - so it is [now] fallen into ruin - and [how many] an abandoned well and [how many] a lofty palace.
So have they not traveled through the earth and have hearts by which to reason and ears by which to hear? For indeed, it is not eyes that are blinded, but blinded are the hearts which are within the breasts.
And they urge you to hasten the punishment. But Allah will never fail in His promise. And indeed, a day with your Lord is like a thousand years of those which you count.
And for how many a city did I prolong enjoyment while it was committing wrong. Then I seized it, and to Me is the [final] destination.
