Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • Adhallani (أَضَلَّنِي): Led me astray, caused me to deviate, or misled me.
  • Adh-Dhikr (الذِّكْر): The Reminder — referring here to the Qur'an and the faith it brings.
  • Khadhūlan (خَذُولًا): Utterly abandoning, failing to help, or forsaking someone in their time of need.

The Interpretation:

In this profound verse, we hear the anguished cry of a person who has wronged their own soul, standing on the Day of Judgment in a state of utter regret and remorse. This person, who had the opportunity to follow the truth, now bites their own hands in sorrow and exclaims: "Oh, would that I had taken the path with the Messenger of Allah, Muhammad (peace be upon him)!" They lament their foolish choice of companionship, saying: "Oh, would that I had never taken so-and-so as a close friend!"

Then comes the core of their confession: *"He indeed led me astray from the Reminder (the Qur'an) after it had come to me."* This means that the truth had reached them — the Qur'an was recited, the message was clear, and the path of guidance was illuminated. Yet, this evil companion — through whispers, mockery, and false arguments — managed to pull them away from the light that had already entered their heart. The friend did not create the truth or the falsehood; rather, they actively steered the person away from what they already knew to be right.

The verse concludes with a universal truth: *"And Satan is ever a forsaker of man."* The word "Satan" here encompasses not only Iblis and his progeny but also every rebellious and wicked being — whether from among the jinn or from among mankind — who invites others to disobedience. The nature of such a companion is that they will abandon you exactly when you need them most. When the punishment descends and calamity strikes, they will disown you and wash their hands of you, just as Satan himself disowned his followers on the Day of Judgment.

This verse carries a powerful and timeless lesson for every believer: the choice of companions is a matter of eternal consequence. A righteous friend will remind you of Allah when you forget, support you in obedience, and be a means of drawing you closer to Paradise. A wicked friend, on the other hand, may be the very rope that drags you into the Fire — even after the truth has reached you and settled in your heart.

So, dear reader, reflect deeply upon your own circle of companions. Are they bringing you closer to the Qur'an or pulling you away from it? Do they encourage your prayers, your honesty, and your character, or do they make light of your faith and lead you into heedlessness? Let this verse be a wake-up call — for the friendship that ends in mutual blame and eternal separation is the worst of all bargains. Choose your friends with the same care with which you would choose your destination in the Hereafter, for indeed, a person follows the religion of their close friend. May Allah protect us all from the companionship of the wicked and grant us sincere friends who lead us to His pleasure.

📜 Verse 27-31 — Al-Furqan

And the Day the wrongdoer will bite on his hands [in regret] he will say, "Oh, I wish I had taken with the Messenger a way.
Oh, woe to me! I wish I had not taken that one as a friend.
He led me away from the remembrance after it had come to me. And ever is Satan, to man, a deserter."
And the Messenger has said, "O my Lord, indeed my people have taken this Qur'an as [a thing] abandoned."
And thus have We made for every prophet an enemy from among the criminals. But sufficient is your Lord as a guide and a helper.
