Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- "Baladatan maytan" — a dead land: meaning barren, dry, and devoid of vegetation or life.
- "An'aam" — grazing livestock, such as camels, cattle, sheep, and goats.
- "Anāsiyya" — the plural of "insī" (human being); it refers to many people, both men and women.
Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse continues the description of Allah’s immense power and mercy, following the mention of the winds that carry clouds as glad tidings of rain. Allah says: We send down pure water from the sky, and among the wisdoms behind this is that We bring life by it to a dead land — a land that was dry, cracked, and barren, with no plants or greenery. Through this water, the earth stirs to life: seeds sprout, vegetation flourishes, and the land becomes lush and fertile once again. This is a vivid reminder of Allah’s ability to resurrect the dead, for just as He revives the earth with rain, He will revive the bodies of mankind on the Day of Resurrection.
Furthermore, Allah says: "And We give drink to it — from what We have created — of grazing livestock and many people." This means that from this same water, Allah provides drink for countless animals and a great multitude of human beings, across different lands and generations. The livestock drink from it and graze on the plants it produces, and humans drink from it directly or through the springs, wells, and rivers that it replenishes. Thus, the water becomes a source of life for all creatures, sustaining both the animal kingdom and humanity.
Notice how Allah mentions the dead land first, then the livestock, then the people — because the revival of the land is the cause of life for both animals and humans. The land is the foundation; when it comes alive, everything that depends on it also thrives. This is a profound sign of Allah’s mercy and His perfect arrangement of creation.
A Da'wah Reflection:
Dear reader, look at this simple yet magnificent reality: water, a substance so ordinary, yet it is the secret of life on Earth. Every sip you take, every bite of food you eat, every animal you see grazing — all of it is a chain of mercy that begins with a drop of rain from the sky. This is not a random occurrence; it is the deliberate act of a Wise and Merciful Creator who provides for His creation without any need from them.
If Allah can revive a barren land with water, then He is certainly able to revive your heart with faith, your soul with peace, and your life with purpose. Just as the rain transforms a desert into a garden, the Qur'an — which is described as "life-giving" — can transform a hardened heart into one that is soft, humble, and full of light. So turn to Allah, the One who sends down mercy in the form of rain and guidance in the form of revelation. Thank Him for His countless blessings, and let the sight of rain remind you of His power, His love, and His promise of resurrection. Indeed, in these signs are clear proofs for people who reflect and believe.
