Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Al-ʿAzīz (الْعَزِيزُ): The All-Mighty, the Invincible, the One who prevails over all things and is never defeated.
- Ar-Raḥīm (الرَّحِيمُ): The Most Merciful, the One who showers His compassion and kindness upon His believing servants.
Tafsir (Explanation):
After the people of ʿĀd persisted in rejecting their Prophet Hūd (peace be upon him) and refused to heed his sincere warnings, Allah destroyed them with a fierce, bitterly cold wind that left nothing standing. This was not merely an event of the past—it stands as a timeless lesson for all who come after them, a clear sign that the truth of Allah’s messengers is real and that His punishment for those who persist in denial is certain. Yet, despite such overwhelming evidence, most of those who heard the story still did not believe.
In this verse, Allah reassures His Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and every believer with a profound truth: "And indeed, your Lord—He is the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful." These two divine attributes are mentioned together to give hope and instill awe. He is Al-ʿAzīz—the All-Mighty—who has absolute power over all creation. No one can escape His grasp, and no tyrant, no matter how strong, can stand against His will. He is fully capable of destroying the arrogant and humiliating the oppressors, just as He did with the people of ʿĀd. At the same time, He is Ar-Raḥīm—the Most Merciful—to those who turn to Him in repentance and faith. His mercy is not limited; it embraces the believer who stumbles, the sinner who seeks forgiveness, and the weak who place their trust in Him.
This verse is a beautiful balance of fear and hope. It reminds the believer that no matter how powerful the forces of falsehood may appear in this world, Allah’s might is far greater. And for those who are sincere, His mercy is the ultimate refuge. So take heart, O believer—your Lord is mighty enough to protect you, and merciful enough to forgive you. Let this certainty fill your heart with peace, and let it motivate you to remain steadfast on His path, calling others to His truth with patience and wisdom.
