Word Meanings:

  • Rabbu (Lord): The Owner, Master, and Sustainer who manages and governs all affairs.
  • Al-Mashriq (The East): The place where the sun rises.
  • Al-Maghrib (The West): The place where the sun sets.
  • Ma baynahuma (What is between them): All that lies between the East and West, including the heavens, the earth, and everything within them — the celestial bodies, the creatures, and all that exists.
  • Ta'qilun (You use reason): You possess sound intellects that can perceive the truth and distinguish it from falsehood.

Explanation of the Verse:

Prophet Moses (peace be upon him) continued his powerful dialogue with Pharaoh, who had arrogantly claimed divinity for himself and asked Moses: "What is the Lord of the worlds?" — a question posed with mockery and denial. Moses answered with a clear, profound truth: "He is the Lord of the East and the West and whatever is between them, if you will use reason."

Moses pointed to the most visible and undeniable signs of Allah's Lordship: the sun rises from the East and sets in the West with perfect regularity, day and night follow each other in precise order, and all that lies between them — the stars, the planets, the mountains, the seas, the plants, the animals, and all living beings — are under His absolute command and management. This magnificent system, which never fails and never deviates, is clear evidence that there is One Who created it, sustains it, and controls it.

Moses challenged Pharaoh and his people to use their intellects. For a mind that is sound and free from arrogance, the order of this universe is sufficient proof that its Lord is One, and that no human being — no matter how powerful — can claim divinity. The sun does not rise by Pharaoh's command, nor does it set by his will. The One who manages this vast cosmos is far greater than any tyrant who sits on a throne.

This verse teaches us that faith is not blind; it is built on reflection and reasoning. The Qur'an repeatedly calls upon people to think, to ponder, and to observe the signs of Allah in the universe. When a person uses their intellect sincerely, they will inevitably arrive at the truth: that there is no god but Allah, the Lord of all that exists.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, look at the sun that rises every morning and sets every evening. Look at the stars that decorate the night sky. Look at the earth beneath your feet and the sky above your head. All of this speaks to you with the language of creation: there is a Creator, a Sustainer, a Manager — and He alone deserves your worship. Pharaoh, with all his power and armies, could not move a single star or delay the sunrise by one moment. So why would anyone worship a human being, or an idol, or any created thing, when the Lord of all creation is calling them to Him?

Allah has given you a mind — use it. He has given you eyes — see with them. He has given you a heart — reflect with it. The path to Allah is open, and the evidence is all around you. The One who created you, who feeds you, who gives you life and will cause you to die, and who will resurrect you for judgment — He is the only One worthy of your love, your obedience, and your worship. Do not be like Pharaoh, whose arrogance blinded him until the sea swallowed him. Be among those who use their intellect to find the truth and submit to their Lord with humility and sincerity.
