Key Words and Phrases:
- "Ilahan ghayri" (إِلَٰهًا غَيْرِي): A deity or god other than me.
- "Al-masjuneen" (الْمَسْجُونِينَ): Those who are imprisoned or confined.
Explanation of the Verse:
After Prophet Moses (peace be upon him) presented his clear proofs and arguments to Pharaoh, demonstrating the Oneness of Allah and calling him to worship Him alone, Pharaoh found himself utterly defeated in debate. He had no rational response left. So, instead of submitting to the truth, he resorted to arrogance and intimidation. He said to Moses: "If you take any god other than me, I will surely throw you into prison with all those who are imprisoned."
This was a blatant threat from a tyrant who considered himself the supreme authority, even over divinity. Pharaoh, in his delusion, demanded that Moses worship him alone, and he used the power of the state to silence the truth. This is the hallmark of every arrogant oppressor throughout history: when they cannot win with logic, they turn to force and threats. The verse captures the moment when falsehood, having been exposed, abandons all pretense of reason and reveals its true nature—coercion and tyranny.
Reflection and Guidance:
This verse teaches us a profound lesson about the nature of truth and falsehood. Truth is always supported by clear evidence and reason, while falsehood relies on intimidation and oppression. Moses (peace be upon him) stood firm in the face of this terrifying threat, because his trust was in Allah, not in Pharaoh's power. For a believer, no threat—no matter how severe—should ever deter them from speaking the truth and worshipping Allah alone.
Notice how Pharaoh's threat was empty in the end. Despite his power, he could not harm Moses except by Allah's will, and ultimately, Pharaoh drowned in the sea while Moses and his followers were saved. This is a timeless reminder that no tyrant, no matter how mighty, can overcome the will of Allah. So, when you are faced with pressure to compromise your faith or to bow to falsehood, remember the courage of Moses. Stand firm, trust in Allah, and know that the outcome is always with the righteous. The prison of this world is temporary, but the freedom of faith and the pleasure of Allah are eternal.
