Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Fa-ulqiya (فَأُلْقِيَ): They were cast down or thrown — indicating a sudden, involuntary, and overwhelming fall, as if they had no control over their bodies.
- As-saharatu (السَّحَرَةُ): The magicians — the elite sorcerers of Pharaoh who had gathered to compete against Prophet Musa (Moses, peace be upon him).
- Sājidīn (سَاجِدِينَ): Prostrating — falling flat on their faces in humble submission to Allah.
Tafsir (Explanation):
When the magicians witnessed the magnificent miracle of Musa — his staff transforming into a great serpent that swallowed all their ropes and staffs, which they had made to appear as moving snakes through their illusions — they realized with absolute certainty that this was no mere trickery or human sorcery. This was divine power, the undeniable truth of the Lord of the heavens and the earth.
At that very moment, their hearts were illuminated with faith, and their souls surrendered completely. They did not hesitate, nor did they consult Pharaoh or seek his permission. Overwhelmed by the awe of the truth, they fell to the ground in prostration — as if an unseen force had cast them down upon their faces. It was not a deliberate choice of posture; rather, their entire beings were so overtaken by the majesty of what they witnessed that their bodies responded instinctively, submitting to their Creator before their minds could even process it.
This prostration was not one of mere respect or admiration — it was a prostration of true faith and worship, acknowledging that the One who performed such a miracle through Musa was none other than Allah, the Lord of all worlds, the Lord of Musa and Harun.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This powerful scene teaches us a profound lesson: the truth, when it appears clearly, has the power to break through even the hardest of hearts. These magicians were experts in their craft — they had spent their lives mastering illusion and deception. Yet, when confronted with the pure, unadulterated truth of Allah's power, they did not argue, deny, or cling to their pride. They surrendered instantly.
How beautiful is this example for us! When we encounter the signs of Allah in the Quran and in the universe, our hearts should soften and submit. We should not let arrogance, habit, or the fear of what others might say prevent us from embracing the truth. The magicians lost their worldly status, faced Pharaoh's wrath, and ultimately were martyred — but they gained the eternal pleasure of Allah and the everlasting reward of Paradise.
Let us ask ourselves: Are we as quick to submit to Allah when we hear His verses or witness His signs? Or do we delay, hesitate, or make excuses? The magicians teach us that true success lies not in preserving our ego, but in humbling ourselves before our Creator — even if it costs us everything in this world, for what awaits with Allah is far greater and everlasting.
