Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • وَاغْفِرْ — And forgive, meaning to cover, pardon, and overlook sins.
  • لِأَبِي — For my father (referring to his biological father, Āzar, who was an idol-worshipper).
  • مِنَ الضَّالِّينَ — Among those who have gone astray from the path of truth and guidance, specifically through polytheism (shirk).

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse records a heartfelt supplication from Prophet Ibrāhīm (Abraham, peace be upon him) to his Lord, asking Him to forgive his father. At this moment, Ibrāhīm was still unaware of his father’s final destiny—that he would persist in disbelief and polytheism until his death. Driven by deep compassion and filial love, Ibrāhīm prayed for his father’s salvation, hoping that Allah would guide him from the darkness of misguidance to the light of faith, and thereby pardon his sins.

This prayer was made before it became clear to Ibrāhīm that his father was an enemy of Allah and would die upon unbelief. Once Allah revealed to him that his father was among the inhabitants of the Fire, Ibrāhīm immediately ceased praying for him and disassociated himself from him, as commanded by Allah in another verse: "And Ibrāhīm’s seeking forgiveness for his father was only because of a promise he had made to him. But when it became clear to him that he was an enemy of Allah, he disassociated himself from him" (Sūrat At-Tawbah, 9:114).

This verse teaches us the profound mercy and compassion that filled the heart of Ibrāhīm—a prophet who loved his people and yearned for their guidance. It also demonstrates the proper etiquette of supplication: we may pray for the guidance and forgiveness of our loved ones while there is still hope for their repentance, but once it is certain that they have died upon disbelief, we must submit to Allah’s decree and follow His command to disassociate from them.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear reader, look at the noble character of Ibrāhīm—the friend of Allah (Khalīlullāh)—how his heart ached for his father’s salvation. This is the essence of true love: to desire good for others, especially for one’s family. Yet, when the truth became clear, he did not let his emotions override his obedience to Allah. He submitted completely.

Let this be a reminder for us today: cherish your parents, pray for their guidance while they are alive, and strive to be the reason they find the path to Allah through your kindness, gentle words, and beautiful example. And if you have loved ones who have passed away upon disbelief, do not despair—but turn your energy toward your own faith and the guidance of those still living. Islam is a religion of balance: mercy without compromising truth, and love without disobeying the Creator.

May Allah guide us all to the straight path, forgive our sins, and unite us with the righteous in the highest gardens of Paradise.
