Key Words and Phrases:
- Makr (مَكْرًا): A scheme, plot, or cunning plan. It refers to devising a plan secretly, often with deceptive intent.
- La Yash'urūn (لَا يَشْعُرُونَ): They do not perceive, sense, or realize. It implies a complete unawareness of what is happening around them or what is being planned against them.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this verse, Allah (Exalted be祂) unveils the hidden reality behind the scenes of the story of Prophet Salih (peace be upon him) and his people, the Thamud. The disbelievers among them, driven by arrogance and hatred for the truth, gathered secretly and devised a cunning and wicked plot. Their plan was to ambush Salih and his family at night, to kill them and eliminate the call to monotheism once and for all. They were so confident in their scheme that they believed no one could thwart them.
But Allah, the All-Knowing and All-Powerful, had His own plan. When the Qur'an says, "And We planned a plan," it means that Allah responded to their treachery with a decisive and perfect counter-plan. He protected His Prophet from their evil hands and turned their plot against them. Their very scheme became the means of their own destruction. They were destroyed by a punishment that came upon them suddenly, at a time they least expected, while they were still asleep in their homes, unaware of the fate that was descending upon them.
The phrase "while they did not perceive" is deeply significant. It highlights two layers of unawareness: first, they did not realize that Allah was fully aware of their secret conspiracy, and second, they had no idea that His punishment was imminent. They thought they were in control, but in reality, they were walking straight into their own doom. This is a universal truth: human cunning, no matter how elaborate, is utterly insignificant before the wisdom and power of the Creator.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse carries a timeless lesson for every believer. It reassures us that no matter how powerful, cunning, or well-organized the enemies of truth may appear, Allah's plan is always superior. The disbelievers of Thamud had every reason to believe their plot would succeed—they had numbers, resources, and secrecy on their side. Yet, in a single moment, all their plans crumbled into nothing.
For the believer, this is a source of immense comfort and strength. When you face opposition, mockery, or even persecution for your faith, remember that your Lord sees every secret, hears every whisper, and holds absolute control over all affairs. You are never alone, and your enemies are never truly in charge. The same Allah who saved Salih from the swords of his people is alive and capable of saving you from every hardship. Trust in Him, remain steadfast on His path, and leave the outcome to Him. His victory is guaranteed for those who are patient and sincere.
