Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Taqāsamū – They took a mutual oath, each one swearing to the others.
  • La-nubayyitannahu – We will certainly attack him by night (i.e., take him by surprise in the darkness).
  • Ahlahu – His family and his followers who believed with him.
  • Waliyyihi – The guardian or next of kin responsible for seeking retribution for his blood.
  • Mahlika ahlihi – The destruction or killing of his family.

Tafsir (Explanation):

These nine men, the ringleaders of mischief and corruption in the community of Thamud, conspired together in secret. They said to one another: "Let us all swear a solemn oath by Allah, binding ourselves to this plan: we will go to Salih (peace be upon him) at night, taking him and his household completely by surprise, and we will kill them all. Then, after the deed is done, we will go to his next of kin and swear with the utmost confidence: 'We were not present at the killing of his family, and we are absolutely truthful in what we say.'"

They imagined that by swearing false oaths they could escape both earthly justice and divine accountability. They thought they could erase their crime with lies, and that no one would question their words. But how foolish is the one who forgets that Allah hears every whisper and sees every hidden intention! They plotted in the darkness of the night, but the Light of Allah encompassed them, and their scheme was destined to fail.

This verse reveals the depths of hypocrisy and arrogance that can consume a heart when it turns away from the truth. These men were not ignorant of Allah—they swore by His name! Yet they used His blessed name to sanctify their wickedness. They planned murder, then planned to cover it with perjury, believing they could deceive both people and their Creator.

But ponder this: what was the outcome? Allah destroyed them all with a single mighty blast, and their carefully laid plans became dust. Their oaths did not protect them, their lies did not save them, and their conspiracy only hastened their own destruction.

A Lesson for the Believers:

This story carries a profound warning for every generation. When people abandon the guidance of Allah and follow their own desires, they can reach a state where they swear by Allah to commit the most heinous crimes. Yet the believer knows that Allah is always watching, always aware, and that no plot succeeds against His will.

The Qur'an teaches us that truthfulness and integrity are the foundations of faith. A true Muslim does not use oaths to deceive, nor does he hide behind lies to escape responsibility. Even in the face of oppression, the believer trusts in Allah's justice and knows that the end belongs to the righteous.

Let this verse inspire you to reflect: are your words and actions aligned with the truth? Do you remember that Allah sees everything, even in the darkest night? The conspirators of Thamud thought they could hide their evil under the cover of darkness and false oaths—but Allah exposed their plot and destroyed them. So be certain, dear reader, that Allah's justice is swift for the wrongdoers, and His protection is near for those who remain steadfast upon the truth.

And what a beautiful promise awaits those who trust in Allah! He says: "Indeed, Allah defends those who have believed" (Al-Hajj 22:38). So hold firm to your faith, speak the truth even when lies seem easier, and know that the One who sees in the dark is the best of protectors.

They said, "We consider you a bad omen, you and those with you." He said, "Your omen is with Allah. Rather, you are a people being tested."
48وَكَانَ فِي الْمَدِينَةِ تِسْعَةُ رَهْطٍ يُفْسِدُونَ فِي الْأَرْضِ وَلَا يُصْلِحُونَ
And there were in the city nine family heads causing corruption in the land and not amending [its affairs].
They said, "Take a mutual oath by Allah that we will kill him by night, he and his family. Then we will say to his executor, 'We did not witness the destruction of his family, and indeed, we are truthful.' "
50وَمَكَرُوا مَكْرًا وَمَكَرْنَا مَكْرًا وَهُمْ لَا يَشْعُرُونَ
And they planned a plan, and We planned a plan, while they perceived not.
51فَانظُرْ كَيْفَ كَانَ عَاقِبَةُ مَكْرِهِمْ أَنَّا دَمَّرْنَاهُمْ وَقَوْمَهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ
Then look how was the outcome of their plan - that We destroyed them and their people, all.
