Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- "Wa amtarna" (And We rained down): This refers to sending down something from above, here specifically a punishment from the sky.
- "Mataran" (a rain): In this context, it is not the usual life-giving rain but a destructive shower of stones.
- "Fasa'a" (how evil/terrible): An expression of intense disapproval and condemnation.
- "Al-mundhareen" (those who were warned): The people to whom the warnings of punishment had been delivered but who rejected them.
Tafsir (Explanation):
After the Prophet Lot (peace be upon him) and his family were saved from the doomed town, Allah Almighty describes the fate of the wicked people who persisted in their sin and defiance. He says: "And We rained down upon them a rain" — and that rain was not water from the clouds, but a shower of hard clay stones (sijjeel) sent from the heavens, which struck every single one of them and utterly destroyed them. This was a punishment that came upon them from above, sealing their fate after they had been repeatedly warned by their prophet.
Then Allah says: "So evil was the rain of those who were warned" — meaning, how terrible and dreadful was that rain for the people who had been cautioned and admonished but refused to listen. They had been given every chance to repent and turn back to Allah, yet they mocked the warnings and persisted in their corruption. Therefore, their punishment was a rain of destruction, not of mercy — a fitting end for those who rejected the truth and harmed the righteous.
This verse carries a profound lesson for all of humanity: when a people are warned by Allah's messengers and they still persist in sin, the consequences can be devastating. The mercy of Allah is vast, but so is His justice. The same sky that brings life-giving rain to the earth can bring destruction to those who defy their Lord.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, reflect on this scene: a whole community wiped out in an instant because they chose arrogance over humility, and lust over righteousness. The story of the people of Lot is not merely history — it is a timeless reminder that Allah's laws do not change. Today, as then, those who openly defy Allah's commands and harm society with immorality are inviting divine consequences. Yet the door of repentance remains open for those who wish to return before it is too late. Let this verse inspire you to be among those who heed the warnings, who value the guidance of the Quran, and who strive to live a life pleasing to Allah. For the rain of mercy falls on those who believe and do good, while the rain of punishment awaits those who persist in evil. Choose wisely, for every soul will taste the result of its deeds.
