Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Al-Hamdu Lillah: All praise and thanks belong to Allah alone.
- Salamun 'ala: Peace and safety be upon.
- As-tafa: Chose and selected (for His divine mission).
- A-Allahu khayrun amma yushrikun: Is Allah better, or what they associate (with Him)?
Tafsir (Explanation):
O Messenger, say to all people: "All praise and gratitude belongs to Allah alone" — praise for His perfect attributes, His countless blessings, and His justice in dealing with the nations of the past. He destroyed the tyrants and the disbelievers who rejected His messengers, and He saved His chosen servants. Then declare: "And peace be upon His servants whom He has chosen" — meaning the messengers and prophets, and those who follow them in righteousness, for they are the ones who received Allah's safety and protection from His punishment in this world and the Hereafter.
Then comes the powerful rhetorical question that silences every opponent: "Is Allah better, or what they associate with Him?" This question is not posed because there is any doubt — rather, it is a decisive argument that leaves the polytheists with no answer. For how can the Creator of the heavens and the earth, the Owner of all dominion, the One who grants life and death, who provides and sustains, be compared to idols carved from stone or wood that cannot hear, see, benefit, or harm even themselves, let alone their worshippers?
The meaning is: Is Allah more beneficial to those who worship Him, or are the idols more beneficial to those who worship them? This is an irrefutable challenge that exposes the folly of shirk (associating partners with Allah). Every rational person knows that the true God — who answers prayers, forgives sins, and controls all affairs — is infinitely better than any false deity that has no power whatsoever.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, reflect on this magnificent verse. Allah teaches us to begin with praise and gratitude, for gratitude opens the doors of blessings. Then He teaches us to send peace upon His chosen servants — the prophets and the righteous — showing us the importance of loving and honouring the people of truth. Finally, He invites us to use our intellect: compare the Creator with the creation, the Powerful with the powerless, the Living with the dead. When you make this comparison with an open heart, you will inevitably conclude that Allah alone deserves your worship, your love, and your obedience. This is the path of success in this life and the next. May Allah make us among His chosen servants who receive His peace and safety.
