Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Anjaynahu (أنجيناه): We saved and rescued him (Prophet Nuh/Noah, peace be upon him).
- As-hab al-Safinah (أصحاب السفينة): The companions/people of the ship — meaning the believers who were with him aboard the Ark.
- Ayah (آية): A sign, lesson, or miraculous evidence — something that points to the power and wisdom of Allah.
Explanation of the Verse:
After the great flood had drowned the disbelievers who rejected the message of Prophet Nuh (peace be upon him), Allah, in His infinite mercy and justice, saved Nuh and the believers who had placed their trust in Him and boarded the Ark. This rescue was not merely a physical salvation from drowning — it was a profound demonstration of Allah’s absolute power over all things. He alone controls the elements, the seas, and the fate of nations. The ship itself was made a lasting sign for all of humanity, a timeless reminder of what happens to those who reject the truth and a beacon of hope for those who obey their Lord. The survival of the believers amidst the overwhelming flood was a miracle that testified to Allah’s protection of His righteous servants, and the destruction of the disbelievers served as a stern warning that no one can escape Allah’s decree.
This verse calls upon every generation to reflect: the same Allah who saved Nuh and his followers is alive and capable of saving you from your trials — whether they be storms of the sea or storms of life. The Ark was not just wood and nails; it was a vessel of faith, carrying people who trusted Allah completely. Their deliverance teaches us that when we hold firmly to faith and righteous action, Allah never abandons us. The sign remains for the worlds — for every nation, every era, every soul — so that we may look at the story of Nuh and realize that Allah’s promise is true: victory belongs to the believers, and His punishment is certain for those who persist in arrogance and disbelief.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, this verse is an invitation to examine your own heart. Are you sailing through the storms of this world with the ship of faith, or are you drifting without a compass? The story of Nuh is not ancient history — it is a living lesson. Allah saved those who believed and acted, and He made their story a sign for you. Let it inspire you to turn to Allah in every difficulty, to trust Him when the waves of life rise high, and to know that His help is near for those who call upon Him sincerely. The Ark of Nuh still floats in the pages of the Quran, carrying a message of hope: no matter how dark the sky, Allah’s mercy is greater, and His protection is guaranteed for the believers. Embrace this truth, and you will find peace in this world and the next.
