Explanation of the Verse:
In this verse, Allah (Glorified and Exalted be He) reminds us of His servant and Messenger, Prophet Nuh (Noah, peace be upon him), whom He sent to his people with the message of pure monotheism—calling them to worship Allah alone and to abandon their idols and false deities. Nuh (peace be upon him) remained among his people for a period of nine hundred and fifty years—an extraordinary span of time, unmatched by any other prophet in history. During all these centuries, he patiently and tirelessly invited them to the truth, using every means of persuasion, warning them of the punishment of Allah and promising them His mercy and forgiveness if they would only repent and believe.
Yet, despite this immense patience and dedication, his people persisted in their arrogance and stubbornness. They rejected his call, mocked him, and continued in their disbelief and oppression. They wronged themselves by refusing the guidance that was offered to them, and they wronged their own souls by choosing the path of destruction over salvation.
When their time was up and their hearts had become sealed with disbelief, Allah sent upon them the great flood—the Tufan—which overwhelmed them completely. The waters rose and covered the earth, drowning every one of them who had rejected the message, while Nuh (peace be upon him) and the believers who had followed him were saved in the ark by Allah's mercy. The verse concludes with the phrase "while they were wrongdoers"—emphasizing that their destruction was not an act of injustice from Allah, but rather the natural and just consequence of their own persistent wrongdoing and transgression.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
This powerful story carries profound lessons for every generation. Imagine a man who spent nearly a thousand years calling his people to goodness—never giving up, never despairing, always hoping for their guidance. This is the essence of true patience and sincere dedication to the cause of Allah. It teaches us that delivering the message of truth is a duty that requires perseverance, even when results seem slow or absent.
At the same time, the story warns us of the grave danger of arrogance and heedlessness. Those people had every chance to believe, yet they chose to reject the truth until the very moment when the punishment arrived—and then it was too late. The flood did not come suddenly without warning; it came after centuries of clear signs and sincere calls.
Dear reader, let this verse awaken your heart. Do not be like those who heard the truth and turned away. Respond to the call of your Lord today, before the flood of regret overtakes you. Allah's mercy is vast, and His door of repentance is open—but the opportunity is not endless. Seize this moment, purify your faith, and submit to your Creator, so that you may be among the saved, not among the drowned.
