Explanation of the Verse:
O Messenger, these polytheists from your people mockingly challenge you to bring the punishment of Allah upon them, saying things like, "Rain down stones upon us from the sky" – not out of genuine belief, but as a taunt and a test. They think that because the punishment has not yet come, it never will.
But Allah, in His infinite wisdom and mercy, has appointed a precise, fixed time for every matter. Had it not been for that decreed term – written in the Preserved Tablet – the punishment would have descended upon them immediately at the very moment they demanded it. Their arrogance and mockery would have been met with instant destruction.
Yet Allah, in His justice, delays it for a purpose. He gives them respite, granting them opportunity after opportunity to repent, to reflect, and to turn back to Him. But make no mistake – the punishment will most certainly come. It will not miss them, and it will not be delayed beyond its time. It will arrive suddenly, like a thief in the night, when they are completely unaware and unprepared. They will have no chance to escape, no time to repent, and no warning to flee.
This is a profound lesson for every soul: Allah's promise is true, and His decree is certain. Do not be deceived by the delay, for the delay is not a denial – it is a mercy. But when the appointed hour strikes, no plea will be heard, and no excuse will avail.
A Da'wah Reflection:
Dear reader, look at how Allah deals with those who mock His signs. He does not rush to punish them out of haste, nor does He abandon them entirely. Rather, He gives them time – time that could be used for good, for repentance, for drawing closer to Him. This is the beauty of Islam: it teaches us that Allah's mercy precedes His wrath, and His patience is vast beyond measure.
But do not mistake this patience for weakness or neglect. The Qur'an repeatedly warns us that the punishment of Allah is severe, and His grip is mighty. The wise person is the one who takes advantage of this respite, who uses every moment of life to seek forgiveness and to do good, rather than challenging Allah or mocking His commands.
Let this verse be a wake-up call: the Hereafter is real, the Day of Judgment is certain, and every soul will taste what it has earned. Do not be among those who say, "When will this punishment come?" – for when it does come, it will be too late. Instead, be among those who say, "Our Lord, forgive us and have mercy on us, for You are the Best of those who show mercy." The door of repentance is open now – but it will not remain open forever. Seize this moment before the sudden hour arrives.
