Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Fareeqan (فَرِيقًا): A group or party, specifically referring to a segment of the People of the Book (Jews and Christians).
  • Allatheena ootoo al-kitab (الَّذِينَ أُوتُوا الْكِتَابَ): Those who were given the Scripture—i.e., the Jews and Christians who received the Torah and the Gospel.
  • Yaruddookum (يَرُدُّوكُمْ): They will turn you back, meaning they will cause you to revert.
  • Kafireen (كَافِرِينَ): Disbelievers, those who reject the truth after having accepted it.

Explanation of the Verse:

O you who have truly believed in Allah and followed His Messenger, beware! If you listen to and obey a group of those who were given the Scripture—the Jews and the Christians—and accept their opinions and suggestions regarding your religion, they will not rest until they have dragged you back into disbelief after you have firmly embraced faith. Their motives are poisoned by envy and resentment toward you, and they are themselves astray from the straight path. They will cast doubts and false arguments into your hearts, seeking to shake your conviction in the truth you have come to believe in. Therefore, do not trust them with your religion, do not seek their counsel in matters of faith, and do not let their words influence you—for their ultimate goal is to see you abandon the light of guidance and return to the darkness of unbelief.

A Call to Reflection and Steadfastness:

This verse is a profound warning from your Lord, a wake-up call to every believer to guard their faith jealously. Your iman (faith) is the most precious treasure you possess—dearer than wealth, family, or life itself. How could you ever allow anyone, no matter how learned or persuasive, to snatch it away from you? Allah, in His infinite mercy, is alerting you to the hidden plots of those who harbor ill will toward you, so that you may remain vigilant and steadfast. This is not a call to hatred or hostility, but a call to wisdom and discernment—to hold firmly to the rope of Allah and to seek your guidance from the pure sources of revelation, not from those whose hearts are filled with envy. Take this as an invitation to deepen your connection with the Quran and the Sunnah, for in them lies your protection. When you stand firm on your faith, you become an example of strength and honor, and no force on earth can shake the heart that is anchored in the remembrance of Allah. Let this verse inspire you to study your religion deeply, to surround yourself with righteous companions, and to place your complete trust in Allah, for He is the One who guides hearts and protects them from misguidance.

📜 Verse 98-102 — Aal-Imran

Say, "O People of the Scripture, why do you disbelieve in the verses of Allah while Allah is Witness over what you do?"
Say, "O People of the Scripture, why do you avert from the way of Allah those who believe, seeking to make it [seem] deviant, while you are witnesses [to the truth]? And Allah is not unaware of what you do."
O you who have believed, if you obey a party of those who were given the Scripture, they would turn you back, after your belief, [to being] unbelievers.
And how could you disbelieve while to you are being recited the verses of Allah and among you is His Messenger? And whoever holds firmly to Allah has [indeed] been guided to a straight path.
O you who have believed, fear Allah as He should be feared and do not die except as Muslims [in submission to Him].
