Tafsir (Interpretation):
Can the one who devotes his life to seeking the pleasure and approval of Allah—through sincere faith, righteous deeds, and obedience to His commands—ever be compared to the one who has earned Allah’s wrath and indignation? Absolutely not! These two are as different as light and darkness, as Paradise and Hellfire.
The first person walks a path illuminated by divine guidance, striving to please his Lord in every action, word, and intention. His reward is the ultimate success: Allah’s eternal pleasure, which is the greatest gift of all. The second person, however, has turned away from his Creator, indulging in sins and disobedience, and as a result, he carries the heavy burden of Allah’s anger upon his shoulders. His destination is none other than Jahannam—a place of torment and suffering beyond imagination.
Allah poses this rhetorical question to awaken the conscience: How can these two ever be equal in status? The answer is self-evident—they cannot. This verse serves as a powerful reminder that our choices in this life determine our eternal destiny. It calls upon every soul to reflect: Are we chasing the fleeting pleasures of this world at the expense of Allah’s wrath, or are we striving for His pleasure, which leads to everlasting bliss?
This is a moment of profound reflection for every believer. Let this verse be a turning point—a call to re-evaluate your priorities, to repent from sins that bring Allah’s displeasure, and to renew your commitment to seeking His riḍwān. For the one who earns Allah’s pleasure has truly succeeded, while the one who earns His wrath has lost everything. May Allah guide us all to the path of His pleasure and protect us from His anger. Ameen.
