Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- عهد (ʿahida): A covenant, command, or solemn pledge—here, a false claim of a divine directive.
- قربان (qurbān): An offering or sacrifice presented to draw near to Allah, which, in their claimed tradition, was consumed by fire from heaven as a sign of acceptance.
- تأكله النار (taʾkulu-hu an-nār): The fire eats or consumes it—a miraculous sign they demanded as proof of prophethood.
- البينات (al-bayyināt): Clear proofs, miracles, and undeniable evidences of truth.
- صادقين (ṣādiqīn): Truthful ones—those whose claims align with reality and sincerity.
Explanation of the Verse:
These are the people—the Jews of Madinah—who, when invited to embrace Islam, arrogantly declared: "Allah has commanded us in the Torah not to believe any messenger unless he brings us an offering that fire from heaven consumes." They used this as a pretext to reject the truth, claiming that no prophet could be authentic without such a dramatic sign.
Allah, the Most High, exposes their falsehood and instructs His noble Messenger ﷺ to respond: "Say: Indeed, messengers came to you before me with clear miracles and undeniable proofs—and even with the very sign you mention, the offering consumed by fire. So why did you kill them, if you are truthful in your claim?"
This is a devastating rebuttal. Their own ancestors had rejected and murdered prophets who came with exactly what they demanded. Prophets like Yahya (John) and Zakariyya (Zechariah) were slain by the transgressors among them. So their demand for signs was not a sincere search for truth—it was an excuse to persist in stubbornness and arrogance. If they were truly honest in their claim that they would believe when the sign came, they should have believed in those earlier messengers who brought it. Instead, they killed them.
The verse strips away their pretense and reveals the reality: their hearts were hardened, and no sign would ever satisfy them, because their problem was not a lack of evidence—it was a rejection of the truth itself.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, ponder the beauty of this divine response. Allah does not merely argue with them—He exposes the inconsistency of their position with a question that leaves them speechless. This is the hallmark of the Qur'an: it addresses the intellect and the heart together, dismantling falsehood with clarity and justice.
How often do we, too, make excuses to avoid the truth? We say, "If only I saw a sign, I would believe"—yet the signs of Allah are all around us: the heavens and the earth, the intricate design of our own bodies, the revelation of the Qur'an itself, and the impeccable character of the Prophet ﷺ. The true obstacle is not the absence of proof, but the willingness to submit.
Let this verse be a reminder that Allah's guidance is accessible to all who seek it sincerely. The door of repentance is always open, and the mercy of Allah is vast. Do not let pride or stubbornness keep you from the light of faith. Embrace the truth with a humble heart, and you will find peace that transcends all worldly concerns.
