Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Matā‘ (مَتَاعٌ): Enjoyment, temporary provision, or fleeting pleasure.
- Qalīl (قَلِيلٌ): Little, small, insignificant, short-lived.
- Ma’wāhum (مَأْوَاهُمْ): Their final abode, refuge, or place of return.
- Jahannam (جَهَنَّمُ): Hellfire — the eternal punishment prepared for the disbelievers.
- Mihād (مِهَادٌ): Bed, resting place, or cradle — here referring to a place of rest and comfort.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse follows the previous one, which described how the disbelievers are given a respite in this world — they move about freely, enjoying wealth, status, and the pleasures of life, while the believers may face hardship. Allah (سبحانه وتعالى) now clarifies the true reality of that apparent success: “A little enjoyment, then their abode is Hell — and what an evil resting place!”
The entire worldly life, no matter how long it may seem, is nothing but a brief, fleeting moment — a mere drop in the ocean of eternity. The disbelievers may strut and boast in their temporary luxury, but this life is like a passing shadow or a flower that withers within days. It is *qalīl* — little, limited, and ultimately worthless when weighed against the eternal consequences.
Then comes the stark, sobering truth: “Then their abode is Hell.” After the curtain of this world falls, they will be gathered to a destination that is permanent, painful, and inescapable. The word *ma’wā* (مأوى) signifies a place of settlement and return — not a temporary stop, but a final home. And what a terrible home it is! Allah describes it as “an evil resting place” — a bed that brings no rest, a couch that offers no comfort, only scorching fire, boiling water, and endless torment.
This verse serves as a powerful reminder that the glitter of this world is deceptive. Those who reject the truth and live only for worldly gains are like someone who trades an eternal kingdom for a handful of dust. Their joy is short, but their sorrow is everlasting.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, let this verse awaken your heart. How often do we envy those who seem to have everything in this world — wealth, power, comfort — while they live in disobedience to their Creator? Do not be deceived by their apparent success, for it is nothing but a fleeting mirage. The true success lies in what awaits the believers: eternal bliss in the Gardens of Paradise, where no eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no human heart can imagine.
Take this moment to thank Allah for guiding you to Islam, for opening your heart to the truth, and for giving you the chance to prepare for a home that never ends. Do not waste this precious life on temporary pleasures that vanish like a dream. Instead, invest every breath in what pleases Allah — through prayer, charity, kindness, and seeking knowledge — so that when you meet your Lord, your abode will be the best of resting places: Jannah, where rivers flow beneath the trees, and peace fills every corner.
And if you know someone who is heedless, be a means of guidance for them. Share this truth with love and wisdom, for the Prophet (ﷺ) said: “If Allah guides a single person through you, it is better for you than the world and everything in it.” Let us strive together to be among those who hear the call of truth and respond with faith, before the fleeting enjoyment ends and the eternal abode becomes our reality.
