Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- اتَّقَوْا (Ittaqaw): Those who feared Allah, guarded themselves against His punishment, and fulfilled His commands while avoiding His prohibitions.
- نُزُلًا (Nuzulan): A prepared hospitality, a gracious reception and provision — like a host's welcome for an honored guest.
- لِلْأَبْرَارِ (Lil-Abrar): The righteous, the pious, those devoted to goodness and obedience.
Tafsir (Explanation):
After mentioning the fleeting pleasures and temporary enjoyments that the disbelievers experience in this worldly life, Allah turns our attention to something far greater and more enduring. He says: *"But those who feared their Lord..."* — meaning those who were conscious of Allah in every moment, who submitted to His commands with sincerity and avoided what He forbade with diligence — *"for them are gardens beneath which rivers flow."* These are not ordinary gardens; they are eternal paradises where rivers of pure water, milk, honey, and wine flow beneath the palaces and trees, providing endless delight and tranquility.
The phrase *"abiding therein forever"* removes any doubt about permanence — there is no exit, no end, no interruption to this bliss. It is described as *"nuzulan min 'indillah"* — a hospitality prepared by Allah Himself, not as a mere reward earned by deeds, but as a gracious gift from the Most Merciful. Imagine the honor: the Creator of the heavens and the earth personally preparing a welcome for His righteous servants!
Then comes the profound conclusion: *"And what is with Allah is better for the righteous."* This is a gentle yet powerful reminder that everything the disbelievers enjoy in this world — wealth, status, luxury, and pleasure — is temporary and incomplete. Even if they were given the entire world and all its treasures, it would still be nothing compared to what awaits the believers. The smallest moment in Paradise surpasses all worldly pleasures combined. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: *"The space of a whip in Paradise is better than the world and everything in it."*
