Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Talbisoon (تلبسون): To mix, confuse, or clothe one thing with another so that the truth becomes obscured and indistinguishable from falsehood.
- Al-Haqq (الحق): The truth — here referring to what Allah revealed in the Torah and Gospel, including the description and prophethood of Muhammad (peace be upon him).
- Al-Batil (الباطل): Falsehood — the distortions, alterations, and fabrications they introduced into their scriptures.
- Taktumoon (تكتمون): To conceal or hide — specifically, suppressing the truth they knew well.
- Wa antum ta'lamoon (وأنتم تعلمون): While you know — emphasizing that their actions were deliberate, not out of ignorance.
Tafsir (Explanation):
O People of the Book — Jews and Christians — why do you weave falsehood into the fabric of truth, mixing what Allah revealed with your own distortions and inventions? You take the pure message of your scriptures and blend it with your alterations, so that the genuine becomes tangled with the counterfeit, and the seeker of guidance can hardly tell one from the other.
And why do you hide the truth that you know so well? You know — and your scholars among you know — that the description of Muhammad (peace be upon him) is written in your books. You know that his message is the final truth, confirming what came before and completing what was sent. Yet you conceal this knowledge, not out of ignorance, but deliberately, turning away from it and preventing others from reaching it.
This is a gentle yet piercing rebuke from your Lord: *You know!* You are not being addressed as those who err unknowingly, but as those who possess knowledge and still choose to obscure it. How can a person who knows the truth — who has read it, studied it, and recognized it — then hide it from others? What excuse remains?
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, this verse carries a timeless lesson for all of us. It teaches us the value of intellectual honesty — to never let our desires, biases, or worldly interests override what we know to be true. The People of the Book were not condemned for being ignorant; they were condemned for knowing the truth and still mixing it with falsehood, and for hiding it out of envy and pride.
For you, dear seeker of truth, this verse is an invitation: when you encounter the truth — whether in the Quran, in the authentic teachings of Islam, or in the signs of Allah around you — do not let anything cloud your vision. Embrace it with a sincere heart, for the truth is what sets you free. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) came as a mercy to all of humanity, confirming the core message of all prophets: worship Allah alone, and follow His guidance.
Do not be like those who knew and yet turned away. Be among those who, when they recognize the truth, accept it wholeheartedly and share it with others. For Allah, the Most Merciful, has opened the door of guidance to every sincere seeker — and He promises that whoever holds firmly to the truth shall never be lost.
