Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- تَكْفُرُونَ — You disbelieve, reject, or conceal.
- بِآيَاتِ اللَّهِ — The signs of Allah; here referring to the verses of the Qur'an and the clear proofs within the previous scriptures pointing to the truth of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
- تَشْهَدُونَ — You bear witness or testify; meaning you know and affirm it in your hearts and scriptures.
Tafsir (Explanation):
O People of the Book—the Jews and the Christians—why do you reject the signs of Allah and deny His verses, when you yourselves bear witness to their truth? Your own scriptures, the Torah and the Gospel, contain clear descriptions and prophecies of the final Messenger, Muhammad (peace be upon him). You know well that what he brought is the truth, and your scholars have testified to this before. Yet, despite this knowledge, you turn away and cover up the truth, refusing to accept what your own books affirm. This is a profound contradiction: you witness the truth with your eyes and hearts, and still you reject it. Allah calls you to account for this inconsistency, appealing to your reason and your conscience, for denial after certainty is far worse than ignorance.
A Call to Reflection:
This verse is a gentle yet firm invitation to the People of the Book to look into their own scriptures with sincerity and honesty. It reminds them—and all of us—that knowledge carries responsibility. When the truth becomes clear, the heart must submit. The Qur'an does not attack them out of hostility; rather, it appeals to their own testimony, urging them to recognize the Messenger they were waiting for. For us as Muslims, this verse teaches a profound lesson: we must never let pride, habit, or worldly interest blind us to the truth. It also inspires us to engage with people of other faiths with wisdom and fairness, showing them that Islam confirms the core truths of their own revelations and calls them to the final, complete message of Allah. The door of repentance is always open—whoever returns to Allah with a sincere heart will find Him forgiving and merciful.
