Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Ifatara (افترى): To invent a lie, fabricate a falsehood, or attribute something untrue to someone.
- Al-Kadhib (الكذب): The lie; false statement or claim.
- Min ba'di dhalik (من بعد ذلك): After that; i.e., after the clear proof and evidence has been established.
- Al-Zalimun (الظالمون): The wrongdoers; those who transgress against truth and justice, and ultimately against their own souls.
Tafsir (Explanation):
After Allah (سبحانه وتعالى) clarified the truth regarding what was made lawful and unlawful, and after the People of the Book were presented with the undeniable proof that Prophet Ya'qub (Jacob, peace be upon him) only forbade certain foods upon himself by his own choice—not by any divine decree from Allah—the verse now addresses those who persist in falsehood.
Whoever, after this clear evidence has been established and the truth has become manifest, still dares to invent lies against Allah—claiming that Allah forbade what He did not forbid, or attributing to Him statements and rulings He never revealed—then such people are the true wrongdoers. They are the ones who oppress themselves by turning away from the truth after it has been made crystal clear to them, and they are the ones who refuse to be just and fair in their judgment. Their wrongdoing is not against Allah, for He is far above any harm they could cause Him; rather, their injustice recoils upon their own souls, plunging them into darkness and depriving them of the light of guidance.
This verse carries a profound lesson for every believer: the truth, once it becomes evident, leaves no excuse for those who reject it. The greatest injustice a person can commit is to knowingly speak falsehood about Allah, for this not only corrupts one's own faith but also misleads others who may follow such fabrications.
Dear reader, reflect on the mercy of Allah in this verse. He does not punish out of haste; rather, He first establishes the proof, sends the messengers, and reveals the scriptures so that no one can claim ignorance. Yet, when the truth is clear and one still chooses falsehood, the consequence is inevitable. Let this be a reminder for us to always seek the truth with sincerity, to verify what we attribute to Allah and His religion, and to guard our tongues from speaking about Allah without knowledge. For the one who is just with himself—who submits to the truth when it becomes clear—will find peace in this life and success in the Hereafter. And the one who turns away after the proof has been established only harms himself, for Allah is in no need of our obedience, but we are in desperate need of His mercy.
