Word Meanings:

  • Bid' (بِضْع): A number between three and nine, or up to ten.
  • Sinin (سِنِينَ): Years.
  • Al-Amr (الْأَمْرُ): The entire command, decree, and dominion.
  • Yawma'idhin (وَيَوْمَئِذٍ): On that day — referring to the day of the Romans' victory over the Persians.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse continues the prophecy of the outcome of the war between the Byzantines (Romans) and the Persians. The Qur'an had just stated that the Romans had been defeated in the nearest land (the Levant), but now it declares that they will triumph again within a short span of years — no less than three and no more than ten. This was a remarkable prophecy at a time when the Persians seemed invincible and had crushed the Roman Empire.

The verse then establishes a profound truth: "To Allah belongs the command, before and after." This means that the outcome of all affairs — whether victory or defeat, rise or fall of nations — is entirely in Allah's hands. No empire, army, or ruler has independent power; all are subject to His will and decree. The Persians won by Allah's permission, and the Romans would win by His permission as well. This instills in the believer a deep sense of reliance on Allah alone, not on the apparent strength or weakness of worldly powers.

Then comes the glad tiding: "And on that day, the believers will rejoice." The believers — the Muslims — would rejoice at the Romans' victory. Why? Because the Romans were, at that time, People of the Book (Christians), while the Persians were fire-worshippers (Zoroastrians). The Muslims naturally felt closer to the People of the Book, and their victory would be a sign of the truth of the Qur'anic prophecy, strengthening the faith of the believers and weakening the mockery of the disbelievers of Makkah who had sided with the Persians.

This prophecy was fulfilled exactly as stated: the Romans defeated the Persians within seven years, and the believers rejoiced. This is a living proof of the divine origin of the Qur'an, for no human could have predicted such an outcome with such precision at that time.

A Da'wah Reflection:

Dear reader, this verse is not merely a historical account — it is a timeless lesson and a source of hope. When you see the forces of falsehood prevailing, and the people of truth being oppressed, remember that the command belongs to Allah alone, before and after. He changes circumstances in the blink of an eye. The same Allah who decreed the Romans' defeat decreed their victory within a few years. He is Al-Aziz (the Almighty) who cannot be overcome, and Ar-Rahim (the Most Merciful) who supports His righteous servants.

So, never despair when you witness trials and tribulations. Hold firm to your faith, for the promise of Allah is true. Just as the believers rejoiced on that day, you too will rejoice in the victory of truth over falsehood — whether in this world or in the Hereafter. And know that the Qur'an, which foretold these events with such accuracy, is indeed the word of the Creator who knows all things, past, present, and future. Let this strengthen your conviction and draw you closer to Islam, the religion of truth and certainty.
