Word Meanings:
- بِنَصْرِ اللهِ (With the help of Allah): The victory granted by Allah to the Romans over the Persians.
- يَنصُرُ مَن يَشَاءُ (He grants victory to whom He wills): Allah gives triumph to whomever He chooses, according to His infinite wisdom.
- الْعَزِيزُ (The Almighty): The One who is invincible, whose will cannot be overcome or resisted.
- الرَّحِيمُ (The Most Merciful): The One whose mercy encompasses His believing servants.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse completes the previous statement about the Romans' victory over the Persians, which occurred after a period of seven to nine years, as prophesied in the Qur'an. The believers rejoiced at this victory because the Romans were People of the Book, even though they had altered their scripture, whereas the Persians were fire-worshippers with no divine book. Thus, the triumph of the Romans over the Persians was a sign of Allah's truth and a source of joy for the Muslims.
Allah, Glorified and Exalted, declares that the entire affair belongs to Him alone—before the victory and after it. He grants victory to whom He wills, and He withholds it from whom He wills, in accordance with His perfect wisdom and justice. He is Al-Azeez (the Almighty), whose power no force can challenge or defeat, and Ar-Raheem (the Most Merciful), who showers His mercy upon His believing servants, guiding them to what is good and granting them success in this life and the Hereafter.
This verse carries a profound lesson for every believer: victory and defeat are not determined by material strength or numbers, but by the will of Allah alone. So when you see the forces of falsehood prevailing temporarily, do not despair—for Allah's promise is true, and His help is near for those who remain steadfast in faith and righteousness.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear Muslim, let this verse strengthen your certainty in Allah's decree. Just as He fulfilled His promise to the Romans and brought joy to the believers, He will surely fulfill His promises to you if you hold fast to His rope and trust in Him. The Almighty who subdued the mighty Persian Empire with the weaker Romans is fully capable of granting you victory over every hardship you face—whether it be an inner struggle against your own desires, a trial in your family, or a challenge in your community. Turn to Him with a sincere heart, rely on Him alone, and remember that His mercy is greater than any obstacle, and His power is above every force. The Qur'an is not merely a book to be read—it is a living guide that illuminates your path and fills your heart with hope and tranquility. Embrace it, act upon it, and you will witness His help in ways you never imagined.
