Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Naseetum (نَسِيتُمْ): You neglected, forgot, or disregarded.
- Naseenakum (نَسِينَاكُمْ): We have left you, abandoned you, or disregarded you (in punishment).
- 'Adhab al-Khuld (عَذَابَ الْخُلْدِ): The everlasting punishment, the torment of eternity that never ends.
Tafsir (Explanation):
On the Day of Judgment, when the disbelievers and wrongdoers are cast into the Fire, they will be addressed with a stern rebuke that cuts to the very core of their regret: "Taste this punishment now!" This is the direct consequence of their neglect in the worldly life — they forgot that this Day would ever come. They were so consumed by the fleeting pleasures, desires, and distractions of this world that they pushed aside the reality of standing before their Lord for accountability. They lived as though they would never die, never be resurrected, and never face the consequences of their deeds.
In response to their willful forgetfulness, Allah declares: "We have forgotten you" — meaning, We have left you in this torment, abandoned you to its severity, and paid no heed to your suffering, just as you paid no heed to the command of your Lord and the appointment with Him. This is a profound and terrifying justice: the one who ignores Allah in life will find himself ignored by Allah's mercy in the Hereafter.
Then the address intensifies: "And taste the punishment of eternity!" This is the punishment that never ceases, the fire that never cools, the agony that never pauses. It is not a temporary affliction but an everlasting reality — all because of what their own hands had sent forth: their disbelief, their sins, their arrogance, and their rejection of the truth that was made clear to them.
This verse serves as a powerful awakening for every soul still breathing. It reminds us that the greatest loss is not the loss of wealth or health, but the loss of one's own self through heedlessness of the Hereafter. The Qur'an does not present this scene merely to frighten, but to invite — to invite every heart to turn back to Allah before the moment arrives when turning back is no longer possible. The door of repentance is open now, the mercy of Allah is vast, and the path to Paradise is nearer to us than our own jugular vein — if only we would take it seriously. Let this verse be a mirror: do we live as though we will meet our Lord, or as though we will never die? The choice we make today shapes the address we will hear tomorrow.
