Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- يَلِجُ (yaliju): enters, penetrates, goes into
- يَعْرُجُ (ya'ruju): ascends, rises up
Explanation of the Verse:
This magnificent verse unveils the boundless scope of Allah's knowledge, encompassing every hidden movement and unseen occurrence in the universe. Allah, Glorified and Exalted, declares that He knows everything that enters the earth — whether it be seeds buried in the soil, water seeping through the ground, treasures concealed in its depths, or the bodies of the deceased laid to rest within it. He also knows everything that emerges from the earth — the sprouting vegetation, the gushing springs and wells, the minerals and treasures extracted from its veins, and ultimately the resurrection of all creation from their graves on the Day of Judgment.
Furthermore, Allah knows everything that descends from the sky — the life-giving rain, the divine revelation sent to His messengers, the angels dispatched with His commands, the scriptures revealed to guide humanity, and the decrees and destinies that unfold from His wisdom. And He knows everything that ascends into the sky — the angels rising with the deeds of His servants, the souls of the departed, and the supplications and worship that climb toward His majestic throne.
Nothing escapes His knowledge, whether it is hidden in the darkest depths of the earth or soaring in the highest heavens. His awareness is absolute, complete, and eternal.
Then the verse concludes with two of Allah's most beautiful attributes: "And He is the Most Merciful, the Oft-Forgiving." This pairing is profoundly meaningful — after establishing His all-encompassing knowledge, Allah reminds us that despite knowing every sin we commit, every shortcoming we possess, and every failure in our gratitude toward Him, He remains Merciful toward His servants, not hastening to punish them for their transgressions. He is Forgiving toward those who turn to Him in sincere repentance, who place their trust in Him, and who seek His pardon.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, ponder deeply upon this verse and let it fill your heart with awe and hope. The One who watches over you knows every hidden thing — the struggles you face in secret, the prayers you whisper in the darkness of night, the tears you shed when no one sees. He knows the weight of your burdens and the sincerity of your intentions. And despite His complete knowledge of your flaws and mistakes, He calls Himself the Most Merciful and the Oft-Forgiving.
This is an invitation to draw near to Him without fear or hesitation. No matter how many times you have stumbled, His mercy is greater. No matter how heavy your sins may seem, His forgiveness is vaster. The door of repentance is always open, and the One who knows all is waiting to welcome you back with open arms.
Let this verse strengthen your trust in Allah's perfect knowledge and His boundless mercy. Submit your affairs to Him, for He who knows the secrets of the earth and sky certainly knows what is best for you. And when you sin, do not despair — turn to Him, for He is the Most Merciful, the Oft-Forgiving.
