Surah Saba — Verse 38

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse delivers a powerful and sobering message about those who dedicate their lives to opposing the truth of Allah’s signs. The phrase "those who strive against Our signs" refers to people who actively work to discredit the Qur’an, reject the miracles of the prophets, and turn others away from the path of guidance. Their striving is described as "mu‘ājizīn" — meaning they think they can outrun Allah’s power, escape His grasp, or defeat His message. They behave as though they can frustrate Allah’s plan, as if His signs are something to be overcome or rendered ineffective.

Allah makes it crystal clear that such people are utterly mistaken. Their efforts, no matter how clever, persistent, or influential they may seem in this world, will amount to nothing. On the Day of Judgment, they will be brought forth into the punishment — they will be dragged into the torment of Hellfire, surrounded by the stern angels (the zabāniyah), and they will have no way out, no escape, and no intercessor to save them.

The verse also implies that their loss is twofold: in this world, they exhaust themselves in vain pursuits that bring no real benefit, and in the Hereafter, they face an eternal and inescapable punishment. Their striving, which they thought would weaken Allah’s cause, only seals their own destruction.

Dear reader, pause and reflect on this profound truth: no one can ever defeat Allah’s plan. The Qur’an has been preserved for over 1,400 years, and countless enemies have tried to extinguish its light — yet it shines brighter than ever. This verse is a reassurance to believers: do not fear the schemes of those who oppose the truth. Their efforts are like someone trying to blow out the sun with their breath.

At the same time, it is a warning to every soul: where is your striving directed? Are you working for the sake of Allah, seeking His pleasure, and inviting others to goodness? Or are you, knowingly or unknowingly, part of those who hinder others from the path of guidance? The choice is yours, and the outcome is certain. Let this verse inspire you to be among those who strive in the cause of truth, for their reward is with Allah — and His reward is the greatest of all.
