Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Zulfā (زُلْفَىٰ): Nearness, closeness, or proximity to Allah.
- Al-Ghurafāt (الْغُرُفَاتِ): Lofty chambers, elevated rooms, or high mansions in Paradise.
- Jazā’u aḍ-Ḍi‘f (جَزَاءُ الضِّعْفِ): The multiplied reward — meaning that each good deed is rewarded tenfold up to seven hundred times or more, as Allah wills.
Explanation of the Verse:
O people, know that your wealth and your children — no matter how abundant, impressive, or praiseworthy they may seem — are not the means by which you gain closeness to Allah or elevation in His sight. These worldly blessings are not the currency of honor with your Lord. Do not be deceived into thinking that possessing more of them brings you nearer to Him or secures you a higher rank in the Hereafter.
Rather, the only thing that truly draws you near to Allah is faith in Him and righteous deeds. Whoever believes in Allah with a sincere heart, and follows that belief with good actions — such as prayer, charity, kindness, and obedience to Allah’s commands — then such people are the ones who receive a multiplied reward. Every single good deed they perform is rewarded generously, multiplied many times over, as a grace from Allah. And they will dwell in the highest chambers of Paradise, in complete safety and security — safe from all fear, grief, punishment, and death. They will enjoy an everlasting bliss that never ends.
So do not let your wealth and children distract you from what truly matters. Use them as a means of drawing closer to Allah — spend your wealth in His cause, and raise your children upon righteousness so that they may be a source of good for you. For the true measure of success is not in what you own, but in what you send forth for your eternal life.
A Da‘wah Reflection:
This verse is a beautiful reminder that Allah, in His infinite mercy, does not judge us by the outward possessions we accumulate in this temporary world. He looks at our hearts and our deeds. This is a source of great hope and comfort — for it means that no matter your social status, wealth, or family situation, the door to Allah’s closeness is open to everyone. The poorest believer can outrank the wealthiest disbeliever in the sight of Allah. So strive with your deeds, and let your faith be your greatest treasure. The reward is immense, the chambers are lofty, and the security is eternal — what more could a heart desire? Turn to your Lord with sincerity, and He will elevate you beyond your wildest dreams.
