Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Tanzīl (تَنزِيلَ): The sending down or revelation of something from above, step by step, with wisdom and purpose.
- Al-ʿAzīz (الْعَزِيزِ): The Almighty, the All-Powerful, the One who prevails over all things and is invincible in His might.
- Al-Raḥīm (الرَّحِيمِ): The Most Merciful, the One who showers His compassion and kindness upon His creation, especially upon the believers.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse completes the previous one, where Allah (may He be exalted) describes the Qur’an as a "straight path" (ṣirāṭ mustaqīm). Here, He clarifies the source and nature of this revelation: "It is a revelation sent down by the Almighty, the Most Merciful."
This means that the Qur’an is not the product of human thought, nor is it a fabricated tale. Rather, it is a divine communication from Allah—the One whose power is absolute, who is never defeated or overwhelmed, and who is fully capable of protecting His message and fulfilling His promises. His might is coupled with His mercy: He is severe in His justice against those who persist in disbelief and wrongdoing, yet He is overflowing in compassion toward those who turn to Him in repentance and perform righteous deeds.
The pairing of these two divine attributes—Al-ʿAzīz and Al-Raḥīm—is profound and intentional. It teaches us that Allah’s power is not cold or oppressive; rather, His strength is exercised with wisdom and mercy. He sends down this Qur’an as a guide to save humanity from darkness, and He does so out of His boundless love for His servants. The same Almighty who can punish the arrogant is the One who opens the door of forgiveness for the repentant.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, pause and reflect on this beautiful truth: the Qur’an you hold in your hands is a direct message from the Lord of the heavens and the earth. It was revealed by the One who is too mighty to be challenged and too merciful to abandon His creation. This is your invitation to know Him, to draw near to Him, and to live by His guidance. If you have strayed, know that His mercy is greater than your sins—just turn to Him sincerely, and you will find Him waiting with open arms. If you are steadfast, let this verse strengthen your certainty: you are following a path revealed by the Almighty, the Most Merciful, and He will never let you down. Embrace this Qur’an as your companion, for it is the light that leads to eternal success.
