Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Bayḍ (بَيْضٌ): Eggs, specifically ostrich eggs in this context.
- Maknūn (مَّكْنُونٌ): Hidden, sheltered, or protected — something kept safe and untouched.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse paints a breathtaking image of the pure and perfect companions of Paradise. Allah describes these noble women — the ones who keep their gazes modestly lowered, devoted only to their spouses — as being *"like hidden eggs."*
This is not a reference to ordinary eggs, but to the eggs of the ostrich, which are renowned for their unique beauty. The ostrich carefully buries its eggs in the sand and shields them with its wings and feathers, protecting them from dust, wind, and any rough touch. As a result, these eggs retain a pristine, immaculate whiteness — a pure white blended with a delicate, soft tinge of yellow — untouched by any hand or blemish.
This simile captures multiple dimensions of perfection: an unblemished, radiant complexion; a softness and delicacy beyond compare; and a state of being utterly safeguarded and untouched, reserved exclusively for their beloved spouses. Just as the hidden egg is shielded from all external impurities, these women are free from any flaw, having been preserved in the purest state imaginable.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, pause for a moment and let this imagery settle in your heart. The Lord of the Worlds — the One who created the heavens and the earth — has described the reward of Paradise in terms that our minds can grasp, so that we may yearn for it and strive toward it. If the protection of a mere egg by an ostrich can result in such flawless beauty, then imagine the perfection of what Allah has prepared for those who obey Him! This is not a distant fantasy; it is a certain promise from the Most Truthful. Let this verse ignite within you a sincere longing for Paradise, and let that longing translate into action — through prayer, patience, and righteousness. For the One who described this beauty so vividly is the One who has prepared it for you, if only you seek it with a truthful heart.
