Word Meanings:

  • Duhūran (دُحُورًا): Means expulsion, rejection, or being driven away with humiliation and disgrace. The root word *daḥr* signifies pushing away forcefully and contemptuously.
  • Wāṣib (وَاصِب): Means perpetual, continuous, and unceasing. It describes a punishment that never pauses, lessens, or ends.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse continues the description of the heavenly guards and the fate of the devils who attempt to eavesdrop on the celestial realm. Allah Almighty informs us that these devils are driven away and expelled from the heavens — they are pelted with blazing meteors from every direction, cast out with humiliation and utter disgrace. They cannot approach the exalted assembly of angels, nor can they steal even a whisper of the divine decrees and revelations that Allah communicates to His angels.

The word *duhūran* emphasizes that this expulsion is not merely a physical removal but a dismissal marked by contempt and degradation — the devils are treated as worthless intruders who deserve nothing but rejection. This serves as a powerful reminder that Allah’s protection over His revelation is absolute and impenetrable. No force, no matter how cunning or ancient, can breach the divine security that surrounds the Qur’an and the heavenly knowledge.

Furthermore, Allah adds that for these devils there is a perpetual, agonizing punishment awaiting them in the Hereafter. This is not limited to their worldly humiliation of being cast out from the heavens — rather, their ultimate fate is an everlasting torment in Hellfire, a punishment that never ceases, never relents, and never offers a moment of respite. The word *wāṣib* conveys a suffering that is constant and unbroken, reflecting the persistence of their arrogance and rebellion against their Lord.

Reflection and Da‘wah:

This verse carries profound lessons for humanity. First, it demonstrates the absolute sovereignty and protection of Allah over His divine message. Just as He guards the heavens from the intrusion of devils, He likewise preserves His final revelation, the Qur’an, from any corruption or alteration — a promise He Himself has made: *"Indeed, it is We who sent down the Qur’an, and indeed, We will be its guardian"* (Al-Hijr: 9). This should fill every believer’s heart with certainty and tranquility, knowing that the Book they hold in their hands is authentically preserved by the Creator Himself.

Second, the verse warns us about the consequences of arrogance and transgression. The devils were cast out because of their pride and refusal to submit to Allah’s command. This serves as a timeless lesson: whoever elevates themselves above Allah’s guidance, whoever attempts to distort or reject His revelation, will ultimately face humiliation in this world and perpetual punishment in the next. Yet, the door of repentance remains open for human beings — unlike the devils who were sealed in their rebellion. Allah, in His infinite mercy, calls us back to Him, promising forgiveness for those who turn to Him sincerely.

Third, this verse should deepen our reverence for the Qur’an. When we recite or listen to its verses, we are engaging with a message that is so sacred that the heavens themselves are fiercely guarded to protect it. Let this awareness transform our relationship with the Qur’an — from mere recitation to deep reflection, from casual reading to heartfelt application. Every verse is a treasure that the devils were expelled for trying to access, yet Allah has generously opened this treasure to us.

Finally, let this verse be a source of hope and motivation. If Allah can protect His revelation from the forces of evil, then He can certainly protect you, dear believer, from the whispers of Satan and the trials of this world. Cling to His Book, seek refuge in Him, and trust that His protection encompasses those who sincerely submit to Him. The same Allah who hurls meteors at the devils is the One who says: *"Whoever holds firmly to Allah has indeed been guided to a straight path"* (Aal-‘Imran: 101). So hold firm, and let the guardianship of your Lord be your shield.

📜 Verse 7-11 — As-Saffat

And as protection against every rebellious devil
[So] they may not listen to the exalted assembly [of angels] and are pelted from every side,
Repelled; and for them is a constant punishment,
Except one who snatches [some words] by theft, but they are pursued by a burning flame, piercing [in brightness].
Then inquire of them, [O Muhammad], "Are they a stronger [or more difficult] creation or those [others] We have created?" Indeed, We created men from sticky clay.
